Super Nintendo World has officially opened at Universal Studios Hollywood, expanding Nintendo’s real-world entertainment footprint after earlier locations such as Universal Studios Japan.

The Hollywood installation brings immersive Mario-themed lands and attractions — including the Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge dark ride — to Southern California audiences and aligns with Nintendo’s broader entertainment initiatives across film and live experiences.

At the park’s opening, Nintendo veterans Shigeru Miyamoto and Shinya Takahashi addressed how the company is perceived in mainstream entertainment.

Miyamoto, Nintendo’s longtime creative director and the creator of Mario, said he is honored by comparisons to Disney but noted an important distinction: while Disney is commonly associated with family reassurance, Nintendo’s relationship with families and parents can be more complex because video games remain a medium that sometimes sparks debate within households.

Still, Miyamoto said the comparison is encouraging and suggests Nintendo is moving toward a status that resonates more broadly as family-friendly entertainment.

Takahashi, a senior Nintendo executive involved in the company’s entertainment strategy, framed Nintendo explicitly as an entertainment company.

He explained that Nintendo aims to be recognized across platforms — from theme parks to films and software — for producing experiences that a wide range of audiences can enjoy.

Takahashi highlighted the theme park and film initiatives as complementary efforts to make approachable, shared entertainment.

Those initiatives include Nintendo’s film collaboration with Illumination, The Super Mario Bros.

Movie, which released in April 2023 and marked a major step in the company’s cross-media expansion.

On the software side, Nintendo continues to support the Nintendo Switch lifecycle through first-party releases, digital storefront offerings on the Nintendo eShop, and showcases like Nintendo Direct that announce new games and updates.

Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood represents a tangible extension of Nintendo’s IP into physical spaces, combining ride engineering, interactive elements, and branded retail and dining.

For industry observers and fans, the park is another milestone in Nintendo’s long-running evolution from game developer and publisher to a diversified entertainment brand.
