Four years after its initial release, Disney Dreamlight Valley remains an active live service title, with Gameloft continuing to ship free updates and a major expansion, The Keepsake Sea, slated for November.

Developed by Gameloft in close collaboration with Disney, Dreamlight Valley blends social-sim gameplay with Disney and Pixar characters and is available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 via the Nintendo eShop.

In a recent interview, lead narrative designer Riley Wignall outlined how the team selects which Disney characters and properties to add.

She explained that the process blends community feedback, thematic fit, and creative instinct — the team listens to player requests, considers which characters would make sense for a given update, and follows what “feels” right for the Valley.

Wignall described the selection process as iterative and flexible, driven by the goal of delivering moments that resonate with fans.

On writing for iconic characters, Wignall acknowledged the pressure to keep voices authentic but said the experience is deeply personal and rewarding.

She noted that Gameloft works closely with Disney through feedback cycles: the studio shares narrative material and receives guidance to ensure character portrayals remain true to their original personalities.

That collaboration, she said, helps the team refine dialogue and maintain authenticity across dozens of recognizable characters.

Wignall also addressed the expansion of content beyond feature films.

She pointed to a recent D23 presentation in which Gameloft revealed premium cosmetics inspired by Disney Channel properties — specifically Lizzie McGuire and Hannah Montana — explaining that the idea originated with Gameloft and was embraced by Disney.

Those cosmetic sets are now part of the game’s premium shop offering.

Discussing The Keepsake Sea DLC, Wignall framed the expansion as an opportunity to fulfill a classic Disney fantasy: underwater exploration and mermaid gameplay.

She said the team chose the concept because it aligns with player nostalgia for films like The Little Mermaid and adds a new layer of fantasy to an already character-rich world.

Reflecting on Dreamlight Valley’s success, Gameloft has previously described the title as the company’s most successful game to date.

Wignall attributed the player retention to a combination of iconic characters, emotionally resonant storytelling, and a cozy social environment where players unwind and express themselves.

As for lessons learned, she said the narrative team has grown more confident trusting simple, heartfelt ideas — pursuing obvious, emotionally meaningful moments rather than overcomplicating design.

While Wignall’s role is focused on narrative and she does not have insight into long-term franchise plans or the possibility of a separate sequel, she emphasized her enthusiasm for continuing to write for the Valley.

Disney Dreamlight Valley remains available on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 through the Nintendo eShop, with The Keepsake Sea expansion arriving in November.
