As anticipation for the Nintendo Switch 2 builds across the gaming industry, conversations surrounding third-party support have become a focal point among analysts and fans alike.
In a recent exclusive interview with The Game Business, former Nintendo of America President and industry veteran Reggie Fils-Aimé shared his perspectives on the platform’s future, particularly in relation to high-profile releases from western publishers.
Under Fils-Aimé's leadership, Nintendo of America oversaw some of the company’s most successful hardware launches, including the original Nintendo Switch in March 2017.
The hybrid console has since enjoyed global sales exceeding 125 million units, making it one of Nintendo’s best-selling platforms.
The forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2, although details remain officially under wraps, is expected to continue this legacy by attracting robust third-party developer support and expanding the platform’s appeal with a broader library of titles.
In his interview, Fils-Aimé remarked on the promising arrival of major franchises such as Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty to Nintendo’s platform, underscoring their significance in driving broader appeal.
However, he noted a surprising lack of larger commitments from Microsoft, despite the company’s demonstrated willingness to expand the reach of its intellectual property in recent years.
"I’m surprised that Xbox has not yet fully embraced Switch 2 from a software perspective," Fils-Aimé stated.
He explained that numerous Xbox games, including major series like Gears of War and Halo, could theoretically be ported to the upcoming Nintendo hardware, given the technical capabilities and strategic opportunities.
He added, "Some of these titles are easily adaptable for Switch 2, yet we haven't seen that momentum.
I had expected greater collaboration, especially as we approach the holiday season."
Historically, Microsoft has taken strategic steps to broaden the audience for its celebrated franchises, confirming select releases like Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Minecraft for current and previous Nintendo hardware.
However, marquee series such as Gears of War and Halo have not been announced for Nintendo Switch or its anticipated successor, leaving a significant gap in the third-party lineup that could further strengthen the platform’s library.
Fils-Aimé’s comments come at a time when cross-platform collaboration is increasingly prioritized across the gaming industry, with other publishers regularly headlining Nintendo Direct showcases with new titles and collaborations.
As Nintendo gears up for the future and details surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 remain highly anticipated, industry experts and fans alike will be watching closely to see if broader support from Microsoft and other major publishers materializes.
For now, the discussion around third-party support on Nintendo Switch 2 continues to fuel speculation and expectation.
Reggie Fils-Aimé’s insights highlight the potential for deeper collaboration and expanded software libraries, setting the stage for what could be another successful chapter in Nintendo’s hardware history.
