Blue Dragon PC Port Re:Blue Brings 4K, Unlocked Framerates and Modern Enhancements

Re:Blue, an unofficial PC recompilation of Blue Dragon, is set to bring Mistwalker and Artoon's Xbox 360 JRPG to modern PCs with a suite of quality‑of‑life upgrades.

Blue Dragon originally launched in Japan in 2006 and internationally in 2007 on Xbox 360, published by Microsoft Game Studios; the title shipped across three discs and is notable for Akira Toriyama's character artwork, a scenario by Hironobu Sakaguchi and a score from Nobuo Uematsu.

The Re:Blue project is the work of Tom, the developer behind ReXGlue, a toolset designed to create static recompilations of Xbox 360 games.

According to PC Gamer, Re:Blue combines the original three discs into a single executable, requiring players to supply their own game files.

The recompilation aims to modernize the experience with features that include resolutions up to 4K, multiple aspect-ratio options (16:9, 4:3, 16:10, 21:9, 32:9), unlocked frame rates, windowed and fullscreen modes, native keyboard and mouse support, and achievements.

PC Gamer's coverage, including hands‑on impressions from writer Wesley Fenlon, described Re:Blue as the most polished and feature‑complete recompilation produced with the ReXGlue technology to date.

Fenlon's assessment highlights the project's emphasis on visual and usability improvements rather than simple emulation.

Tom has explained that his approach prioritizes quality and game‑specific work over one‑size‑fits‑all solutions.

He said he holds high standards for projects of this kind and discovered that many enhancements must be tailored to the individual game engine.

In his words paraphrased for clarity: he expects recompilation to require game‑specific effort to reach a level of visual fidelity and feature set beyond what pure emulation typically provides.

Tom contrasted recompilation with emulation by noting emulation preserves the original experience and generally performs well, while recompilation allows developers to add modern enhancements and user‑friendly features when they invest the extra work.

Re:Blue also diverges from several prior ReXGlue projects that blended recompilation with emulation (notably using the Xenia Xbox 360 emulator) by employing a native renderer designed to work with Blue Dragon's engine and modern PC graphics hardware.

That renderer is intended as a demonstration of what the ReXGlue toolset can achieve when developers invest in a native solution.

PC Gamer reports Re:Blue is scheduled to launch on GitHub this Friday.

For developers and preservation-minded players interested in modern JRPG experiences on PC, the project represents a notable example of community‑led recompilation work.

Players looking for comparable JRPGs on dedicated Nintendo platforms can still find many options on Nintendo Switch and the eShop, though Blue Dragon's original release was an Xbox 360 exclusive.
