Introduction

Daytona USA PC port by homebrewer alphanu1 has drawn attention in early October 2026 after the developer confirmed the project used AI-assisted tools during development.

The project converts the Daytona USA Deluxe '93 ROM into native C++, enabling the classic 1994 arcade racer to run on Windows without an emulator.

Reporting and developer comments appeared across Time Extension and GitHub, with code and project notes available from alphanu1's repository.

Project details and platform support

The port recompiles the original Deluxe '93 ROM into C++, allowing native execution on Windows.

The current release is playable with keyboard and gamepad controllers.

The GitHub download does not include original game ROM files, consistent with other recompilation and homebrew releases.

Alphanu1 has stated their immediate goals are higher-resolution support for modern displays and closer verification against Sega Model 2 hardware, and they said a PS VITA port is also in development.

Developer statement on AI use

In an interview with Time Extension, alphanu1—who has more than 25 years of development experience—said that AI is a practical engineering tool that can significantly accelerate work when applied correctly.

They explained that AI can compress projects that might otherwise take months or years into a matter of weeks, while still delivering equivalent quality if used properly.

Alphanu1 also noted that a Rules.md file in the repository references proprietary information and links that cannot be public, and they indicated they did not feel obliged to provide further explanation for those entries.

The developer added they were satisfied that the project's listing identifies it as AI-assisted.

Repository notes and community context

Investigators including Matt Clawson highlighted the Rules.md file on GitHub; the entry led to community discussion about tool-assisted development.

This release follows another recent community project: MatiasZanolli's AI-assisted effort to convert Daytona USA to the Sega 32X.

Sega's Model 1/2/3 arcade boards have long been popular with homebrew developers and FPGA authors because of their complex hardware and challenging software replication.

Alphanu1 was previously profiled for creating an FPGA Model 1 core useful for Virtua Racing, a credential that added context to community interest in this PC port.

Legacy ports and historical note

Daytona USA originally released in arcades in 1994 and received an official PC port in 1996 as part of Sega's short-lived Sega PC line, which included titles such as Virtua Fighter and Sonic CD.

Alphanu1's effort continues that tradition of keeping classic Sega arcade racing titles available on modern hardware through community-led engineering.
