Extreme-G PC Port: SonicDcer Recompiles N64 Racer with 60FPS, Widescreen and Mod-Friendly Tools

An unofficial recompiled PC port of Probe Entertainment and Acclaim Entertainment’s futuristic N64 racer Extreme-G has been released, bringing the 1997 title to modern PCs with a suite of quality-of-life and graphical enhancements.

The project, published over the weekend by modder SonicDcer, is positioned as a way to let the game run on contemporary hardware with updated frame-rate and display options.

Extreme-G originally launched in 1997 on the Nintendo 64.

It arrived ahead of other high-profile console racers of the era — notably Wipeout 64 and Star Wars Episode I: Racer — and proved a commercial and critical success that spawned multiple sequels.

That franchise continued with Extreme-G 2 for the N64 in 1998, Extreme-G 3 (also called XGIII: Extreme G Racing) across PlayStation 2 and GameCube in 2001, and XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association for Xbox, PS2 and GameCube in 2002.

The newly released recompiled PC port offers a range of technical improvements not present in the original N64 release.

It supports a native 60 frames-per-second mode, with further frame-rate smoothing available through interpolation, and allows players to increase the game’s internal resolution.

Additional options include native widescreen support, extended draw-distance and fog-distance settings, customizable control remapping and adjustable rumble strength.

SonicDcer stated that no AI tools were used in the port’s creation, emphasizing that the work is the result of traditional reverse-engineering and recompilation efforts.

The developer also indicated that the absence of AI in the workflow could make the port more maintainable and easier to mod than some other recent recompilation projects.

The release is distributed as a recompiled build; users are required to supply their own game ROM to use the files.

When asked on social media whether a sequel or additional entries from the series will be ported next, SonicDcer replied that the matter is undecided and shared a work-in-progress image suggesting further efforts may be underway.

For fans of classic N64 racing and preservation-minded modders, this recompiled Extreme-G build provides a way to experience the game with modern frame rates, widescreen displays and tunable performance settings on PC while retaining the original game codebase as supplied by user-provided ROMs.
