Terranigma returns to modern platforms: what we know

Quintet's 1995 SNES action-RPG Terranigma is officially headed to modern platforms.

A recent teaser tied to the Pixel Arcadia showcase at Gamescom prompted renewed interest, and an update on August 24, 2026 confirmed that Terranigma will launch on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox and PC in early 2027.

The release will be available in both digital and physical formats.

Background and development pedigree

Terranigma was developed by Quintet and released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) in 1995.

The title is part of a loose trilogy that includes Soul Blazer and Illusion of Time, and it was originally localised only for Europe and PAL regions, making it a sought-after classic among Western collectors.

The original development team included Tomoyoshi Miyazaki as director, designer and writer, Kamui Fujiwara as character artist, and Reiko Takebayashi as writer.

Teaser, themes and creative involvement

Clever River Games posted a teaser ahead of the Pixel Arcadia showcase, using language that evoked Terranigma's central motif of resurrection and world renewal.

The teaser's messaging aligned with the series' longstanding themes of creation, destruction and humanity's relationship with the world.

Original artist Kamui Fujiwara will be directly involved with the new release, providing fresh key art, updated in-game designs and design feedback.

Fujiwara expressed genuine pleasure at the game's return to contemporary systems, noting that while the new version will not be identical to the 1995 original, he is "sincerely delighted" to see the title available again on console and PC.

He emphasized his ongoing creative connection to the project, explaining that he contributed to character and world designs during the original development and hopes the story's themes will resonate with today's players as a living, modern work rather than a relic.

Fujiwara has previously stated his support for a remake.

In 2021 he told Nintendo Life he would favour remaking the game and highlighted the potential to better represent protagonist Ark's distinctive blue hair with modern technology.

What to watch for next

With an early 2027 target window and platform list now confirmed, details such as pricing, eShop pages, release timing for regions, and hands-on previews will be the next items to monitor.

The involvement of Fujiwara and the use of both digital and physical formats are verifiable milestones that underline Quintet's legacy being brought back to current hardware.
