Celebrating 10 Years of Nintendo Wire: Crafting the Ultimate Home Arcade Space
Nintendo fans worldwide know the joy of bringing gaming’s timeless magic into their homes, but few take it as far as Jason Ganos, founder of Amiibo News and editor-in-chief at Nintendo Wire.
In honor of his 40th birthday and the 10-year milestone of Nintendo Wire, Ganos embarked on a mission to fulfill a childhood dream: building the ultimate Nintendo home arcade.
This journey, which marks the beginning of a new Nintendo Wire Home Arcade series, transforms a modest space into a vibrant, retro-inspired gaming room designed for Nintendo Switch and classic arcade fans alike.
Maximizing a Small Space for Big Gaming Ambitions
Ganos began by dedicating a 12 by 6 foot area in his home to serve as the heart of his arcade setup.
"While it isn’t a massive area, there’s plenty of room to create something truly special," he shared, reflecting the deliberate approach taken to ensure every element contributes to an authentic gaming environment.
Recreating Classic Arcade Vibes: Flooring and Lighting
Authenticity was key to the project’s aesthetic.
Ganos sought out a carpet reminiscent of the iconic star-studded patterns found in 1980s and 1990s arcades—a signature look for dedicated retro gaming spaces.
After facing challenges with custom carpet installation, the solution came from Joy Carpets, whose 12 by 6-foot rug sourced via Amazon delivered just the right style and is even reactive under black light.
Costing approximately $250, it seamlessly fit the vision and the dimensions of the space.
To amplify the arcade ambiance, the lighting setup was equally strategic.
A Govee LED ceiling light replaced the original fixture, offering dynamic, customizable illumination for about $60.
For accent lighting, three 24V blue LED strips were installed along the ceiling and a shelf, complemented by power adapters, dimmers, and a diffuser for an even, professional finish.
The complete lighting setup totaled around $140 and delivered a glowing, immersive effect—essential for capturing the spirit of a true arcade.
A word of caution from Ganos: the adhesive on LED strips can damage wall paint during removal, so future installers should take care.
Finishing Touches: Nintendo Decor and Retro Flair
Personal touches bring the space together, and Ganos elevated the decor with framed Mario posters provided by friends at GameStop.
Perhaps the most striking addition is a custom Flynn’s Arcade sign—a nod to the legendary arcade from the film Tron—blending seamlessly into the overall Nintendo Switch-friendly environment.
"It came out a bit smaller than expected, but it fits perfectly and ties the room together," Ganos noted of the finished look.
The Evolving Nintendo Home Arcade
With the LED lighting, Joy Carpets rug, and curated decor in place, the room already radiates the energy of a classic arcade.
While full-sized cabinets are still in transit, the foundation for a unique gaming haven has been set.
Gamers can look forward to upcoming features in the series, including hands-on experiences with Arcade1Up cabinets, original machines from the golden age of arcades, classic retail kiosks, and a deep dive into Stern Pinball machines and accessories.
As Ganos sums up the experience so far: "Even without the arcade cabinets, this space is quickly becoming something special." Stay tuned for more practical insights and inspiration as the Nintendo Wire Home Arcade series continues, guiding fans toward their own game room dreams.
