Description

Highest Score Arcade, the beloved retro gaming destination in Salisbury, Wiltshire, has secured its immediate future after a rallying show of support from the local community and arcade fans across the UK.

The venue, which has been a focal point for arcade enthusiasts since opening its doors in August 2023, recently faced significant financial obstacles that forced a temporary closure.

Yet, thanks to a successful fundraiser, the arcade has been given a renewed lease on life. The campaign, reported by the Salisbury Journal, saw more than £3,000 raised over a single weekend through donations and increased foot traffic.

Owner James Petherick expressed his gratitude to all who contributed: "Support has come from all corners—from Salisbury and Wiltshire, to much further afield, and even internationally.

Together, we have raised enough to secure the arcade's short-term viability.

I am deeply grateful to everyone for their generosity, their visits, and participation during our critical fundraising weekend.

We are now working to update our booking system and encourage everyone to follow our website and social channels for the latest information on opening hours.

We look forward to welcoming guests in the future." Highest Score Arcade first drew significant attention at its launch with a broad selection of classic and modern arcade machines, quickly establishing itself as a hub for gaming nostalgia in the region.

However, as Petherick explained in a recent social media post, the arcade was not immune to the ongoing economic pressures affecting entertainment venues across the UK.

While significant investments were made into new machines, lighting, and facilities, decreased visitor numbers combined with increased operational costs forced the business into what Petherick described as "survival mode." Entry fees were kept intentionally low—just £1 per person—to maintain accessibility, but rising expenses made continued operations untenable without external support. During its reopening on Friday, July 11th, and Saturday, July 12th, visitors contributed through entry fees and donations, while party bookings were offered at half price as an incentive to bolster revenue.

Petherick emphasized that every pound collected would be reinvested directly into maintaining and improving the arcade. The story of Highest Score Arcade is not unique.

Other independent gaming venues in the UK, such as Dorset’s Freeplay Arcade, have also faced closures amid a challenging financial climate.

Nevertheless, Freeplay Arcade has announced plans to relocate, demonstrating the resilience and adaptability of the UK’s arcade community. For local and visiting gamers alike, the rescue of Highest Score Arcade is a testament to the enduring appeal of arcades and the passion of their supporters.

Moving forward, the venue continues to seek the public’s engagement, signaling optimism for both its future and that of similar community-driven entertainment spaces.
