NIS America has officially announced an updated release schedule for The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon, the highly anticipated 13th entry in the Trails series.
Originally slated for a Fall 2025 launch, the game's release has now been moved to January 2026.
This update provides excited fans more time to delve into the expansive RPG series, which has captivated players since Trails in the Sky first launched 20 years ago.
In a statement made public via NIS America's official channels, the publisher reaffirmed its commitment to bringing Trails Beyond the Horizon to Western audiences, following its initial confirmation in March 2025.
The title is set for release on both the Nintendo Switch and the forthcoming Nintendo Switch 2, expanding its accessibility to longtime fans and newcomers alike.
A unique aspect of the Nintendo Switch 2 release is that Trails Beyond the Horizon will be distributed as a Game-Key Card edition.
Unlike traditional physical cartridges, the Game-Key Card provides a method for owners to access the game digitally via a physical product at retail.
This strategy reflects recent industry trends as publishers balance physical and digital distribution models.
NIS America has also introduced a store-exclusive Limited Edition for both platforms, with the Nintendo Switch version priced at $99.99 and the Nintendo Switch 2 edition at $109.99.
The Limited Edition packages will include exclusive collector's items, further enhancing the launch for dedicated fans of the franchise.
The Trails series, which began with 2004's Trails in the Sky, remains one of Nihon Falcom's most acclaimed RPG franchises.
The announcement coincides with the forthcoming remake of Trails in the Sky, set for release in September 2024 from publisher GungHo.
This remake, alongside the upcoming Ys vs.
Trails spin-off arriving this year, offers players a chance to reengage with the series' deep lore and beloved characters before the new title debuts.
While some fans may express disappointment over the adoption of a Game-Key Card format for Switch 2, the new hardware promises enhanced graphics and performance for Trails Beyond the Horizon.
Details regarding upgrade paths or cross-purchase support have not been released at this time.
The delay also allows franchise enthusiasts and new players alike to catch up on previous Trails entries and related titles, building excitement for what promises to be a landmark release in early 2026.
Stay tuned for further updates from NIS America as more information, including gameplay footage and system-specific features, is announced in the lead-up to launch.
