The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero and Trails to Azure — two entries in Nihon Falcom’s long-running Trails series — have been ported to Nintendo Switch 2 with a set of visual and performance upgrades.

The Trails franchise began in 2004 with Trails in the Sky FC and has grown into a multi-arc JRPG saga; the Crossbell arc, formed by Zero and Azure, is widely regarded as a compact, politically driven entry point for newcomers.

Both Crossbell titles were originally developed for the PlayStation Portable and received official localized Switch releases in 2022 from NIS America.

What the Switch 2 ports change

The Switch 2 versions deliver higher-resolution and higher-framerate options compared with the original Switch ports.

Docked play can target 4K at 60fps or 1440p at 120fps; handheld mode supports 1080p up to 120fps with selectable 30fps or 60fps options to conserve battery.

Additional visual updates include improved shadows, enhanced water effects, and upscaled textures.

The ports also add convenience features such as Joy-Con 2 mouse-mode support and the ability to import save files from the earlier Switch releases.

A concise, journalistic restatement of a notable point: the Switch 2 releases do not include a discounted upgrade path for owners of the previous Nintendo Switch versions; the only asset transfer supported is save data import.

In short, players must repurchase the games to obtain the native Switch 2 builds, though they will not lose progress if they move saves forward.

Gameplay and why Crossbell matters

Zero and Azure together form the Crossbell arc, set in the contested city-state of Crossbell between the Calvard Republic and the Erebonian Empire.

The story centers on rookie detective Lloyd Bannings and the Special Support Section as they tackle crime and, later, political upheaval.

Gameplay remains faithful to the Trails formula: strategic, turn-based combat with deep customization, exploration-heavy towns and dungeons, and challenging encounters that reward preparation and tactics.

Buying guidance and platform context

If you do not already own the Switch 2022 ports, the native Switch 2 releases are the preferable choice for new players.

For existing Switch owners, the improvements are substantial but not transformative — buyers should weigh whether the enhanced framerate, resolution, and visual polish justify a second purchase.

The two games are also sold together as a bundle, which is recommended because Trails from Zero flows directly into Trails to Azure.

Note that, at the time of this report, the first two Trails of Cold Steel titles remain unavailable on the Western Switch eShop, which may influence completionist players’ platform choices.
