The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter arrives on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 as a full 3D remake of the original 2005 title, carried out by Nihon Falcom and released for Nintendo platforms with support from GungHo Online Entertainment America.

The remake uses the modern Trails engine introduced in recent entries in the series, converting the original sprite-based presentation into a full 3D experience while retaining the narrative and world structure that long-time fans expect.

On the technical front, the Switch 2 edition launches in a noticeably more stable state than the Switch 2 release of Trails in the Sky: First Chapter did at launch.

The review finds the Switch 2 version of 2nd Chapter delivers a solid experience when played in performance mode; quality mode still exhibits spotty performance and does not consistently justify the reduced frame stability.

In short, players who prioritize smoother gameplay should select performance mode on Switch 2.

Mechanically, the remake mirrors the changes introduced in the 1st Chapter remake: the battle system shifts from a strictly turn-based format to a mixed action/turn-based approach that aligns with more recent Trails entries.

That means combat feels fundamentally different from the 2005 original while preserving the story beats and character progression players remember.

The game allows save data carryover from the first remake, and the review reiterates Falcom's design intent: 2nd Chapter is best experienced after playing First Chapter rather than relying on the in-game recap.

Narratively, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter continues the story in Liberl with Estelle searching for Joshua, expanding scope and emotional stakes compared with the first game.

The remake delivers enhanced presentation for key scenes, making emotional moments land with greater impact than in the original.

The title also preserves series staples: extensive side quests, considerable exploration, and smaller activities such as a fishing minigame that underscore the RPG scope.

This remake is substantial in scale; given that 2nd Chapter was larger than the first game, Falcom's team accomplished a significant technical and design effort to bring it to modern hardware rapidly.

For Switch and Switch 2 owners, the title provides access to an important chapter of the Trails saga on Nintendo platforms via the eShop.

The review concludes that Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter is an excellent remake and a strong RPG recommendation, provided players approach it as the intended sequel to Trails in the Sky: First Chapter.

Version Tested: Nintendo Switch 2.
