Background and platform history
Kamaitachi no Yoru released in 1994 for the Super Famicom as Chunsoft's second sound novel, following Otogirisō in 1992.
The title is widely cited as an early and influential entry in the visual novel genre; later entries in the Kamaitachi series include Kamaitachi no Yoru 2 (2002), Kamaitachi no Yoru × 3 (2006) and Shin Kamaitachi no Yoru: 11ninme no Suspect (2011).
The property has also appeared on multiple platforms over the years, including PlayStation, Game Boy Advance and mobile phones.
An official English localization of the series' spirit came in 2014 with Aksys Games' iOS release Banshee's Last Cry, localized by Jeremy Blaustein.
Story and legacy
The original game centers on a couple, Tōru and Mari, who stay at a remote ski lodge and become embroiled in a murder mystery told through branching narrative paths and multiple endings.
The game emphasized atmosphere and text-driven storytelling, elements that influenced later visual novel creators.
New Super Famicom fan translation
The new English translation was produced by a fan translator and hacker known as ButThouMust, who enlisted collaborators FCC and FredArtz to assist with opening graphics and end credits design.
The patch enables English-language play of the 1994 Super Famicom ROM for the first time, removing the need for a Japanese-to-English dictionary when experiencing the original release.
Developer statements (paraphrased)
On the project's GitHub, ButThouMust explained that work on an Otogirisō patch led them to investigate Kamaitachi's code and that experience was essential: they found Otogirisō more difficult to translate but easier to modify, whereas Kamaitachi's script translated more straightforwardly but required more complex hacking to implement.
The translator also stated explicitly on GitHub that no generative AI or large language models were used in the project; all custom tools, assembly hacks, graphics edits and the translated script were created manually by the team.
Context and related projects
A separate fan translation team, Project Kamai, released an English fan translation of the 2017 remake Kamaitachi no Yoru: Rinne Saisei for PC in 2021.
Fans of classic sound novels who have been waiting for an English version of the Super Famicom original can now play Kamaitachi no Yoru in English via the newly released patch.
For readers interested in ROM hacks and translation work, the project's GitHub provides further technical notes and a spoilers folder documenting tricky script segments.
