Description

Over a decade after its successful crowdfunding campaign, ‘90s Super GP (originally known as '90s Arcade Racer) remains one of the most anticipated yet unreleased racing games for modern platforms, including the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

Developed as a passionate homage to Sega’s legendary Daytona USA by creator Antonis Pelekanos, the title captivated retro racing fans and highlighted the enduring appeal of arcade-style racers.

The project was first revealed in 2013, generating considerable buzz for its promise to deliver classic racing excitement on then-current hardware, including the Nintendo Wii U.

However, the game quickly ran into delays and development headwinds.

Eventually, plans for a Wii U release were dropped, and the project was rebranded as ‘90s Super GP, shifting its focus to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam platforms.

By 2019, developer Antonis Pelekanos had stepped away, and indie publisher Nicalis assumed full ownership of the property.

Since then, the game's official page on the Nicalis website has listed Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam as target platforms—each emblazoned with a “Soon!” label that, after several years, remains unfulfilled.

Evidence now points to the project being mired indefinitely in development limbo.

In a recent development, music label Scarlet Moon, citing years of inactivity, took the step of officially releasing two musical tracks intended for the game—offering beleaguered fans a rare glimpse at what could have defined its energetic soundscape.

The two-track single, aptly titled 'Racing Music', features burning, synth-driven tracks "Burning Clutch" and "Thrill of Speed" by renowned composer Vince DiCola (celebrated for his work on Transformers: The Movie and Rocky IV) and collaborator Kenny Meriedeth.

Scarlet Moon’s Jayson Napolitano, who brokered the collaboration between Nicalis founder Tyrone Rodriguez and DiCola at a past E3 event, stressed the desire to bring the music directly to fans after nearly a decade of delay.

"Given the long wait and the ongoing uncertainty about the game's release, we wanted to ensure fans could finally hear these tracks," Napolitano explained.

He added that permission to release the soundtrack was originally linked to the game’s eventual launch, a milestone that has yet to be reached.

The protracted saga of ‘90s Super GP is the latest in a string of challenges for Nicalis.

In 2019, company leadership—including Rodriguez—faced public allegations concerning workplace misconduct and strained relationships with development partners.

These controversies have further clouded the game’s prospects.

Despite its extended absence from the Nintendo Switch eShop and other digital storefronts, '90s Super GP maintains a cult following, with fans clinging to the hope that the game will eventually see release.

Meanwhile, the newly unveiled soundtrack stands as a small but significant artifact from an ambitious project that, so far, remains out of reach for the racing game community.
