Description

James Carter Cathcart, the acclaimed voice actor recognized for bringing life to Meowth and Professor Oak in the English dub of the Pokémon anime, has passed away at the age of 71 following a battle with throat cancer.

Cathcart’s illustrious career, closely woven with the history of the Pokémon series, has left a profound impact on generations of fans and the broader gaming and entertainment industry. Cathcart’s voice first joined the Pokémon franchise during its original surge into mainstream popularity in 1998, initially voicing one of Ash Ketchum's most memorable rivals, Gary Oak, in the anime's pilot episode.

Over time, his versatility allowed him to take on other vital roles, most notably the cunning and beloved Team Rocket mascot, Meowth, as well as the wise Professor Oak.

Throughout more than two decades, Cathcart brought depth, humor, and personality to these characters, becoming a cornerstone of the Pokémon experience for English-speaking audiences worldwide. Voice actor Erica Schroeder, a long-time collaborator and fellow cast member, announced Cathcart’s passing on social media, sharing an outpouring of admiration for his dedication and craft.

In her touching statement, Schroeder described him as a passionate and generous talent who shaped the hearts and imaginations of Pokémon fans across generations.

She highlighted his unmatched ability to infuse unforgettable charm into his performances, leaving a lasting legacy for the global Pokémon community. In 2023, after being diagnosed with throat cancer, Cathcart made the difficult decision to retire from voice acting.

Despite his health challenges, he voiced his iconic characters for the Pokémon series finale, offering a fitting close to his long-standing contribution to the franchise.

His retirement and eventual passing represent the end of an era for the Pokémon anime’s English cast. Cathcart’s death comes less than a year after the loss of another legendary Pokémon voice actor, Rachael Lillis, known for her portrayal of Misty.

Lillis tragically passed away from breast cancer in August 2024 at age 46, further marking a poignant period for the Pokémon community. As Pokémon continues to thrive on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and through ongoing releases on the Nintendo eShop, the legacy of James Carter Cathcart’s work will continue to shape the memories and experiences of Pokémon fans.

His nuanced performances, especially as Meowth and Professor Oak, are cemented in the fabric of anime and gaming culture, ensuring that his voice will live on in the hearts of viewers for years to come.
