Description

Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the latest mainline entry in The Pokémon Company’s blockbuster series, has kicked off its inaugural Season 1 of Ranked Battles.

Launched on Nintendo Switch, this new competitive season runs through November 4, 2025, inviting trainers worldwide to put their skills to the test for exclusive rewards and the first-ever opportunity to obtain Greninjite, the Mega Evolution stone for Greninja, outside of traditional gameplay methods. Following the recent update revealed in an official Pokémon Company announcement, Season 1 of Ranked Battles challenges players to climb through competitive ranks, beginning at Rank S and progressing up to Rank K and beyond.

One of the highlights this season is the special reward: reaching 'Rank K' earns players Greninjite, a pivotal item that enables trainers to Mega Evolve Greninja into Mega Greninja.

According to the official communication, "this item is not available through standard in-game progression or methods." As such, the Ranked Battles event marks the sole path for obtaining Greninjite—a move designed to incentivize competitive play within the Pokémon Legends: Z-A online ecosystem. The Pokémon Company has also outlined a clear reward structure for Season 1.

Players receive end-of-battle rewards regardless of outcome, promotion rewards as they advance to higher ranks (including Mega Shards for training), and seasonal rewards based on their final standing at season’s end.

Examples of these rewards include rare items like the Sport Ball, Gold Bottle Cap, Seed of Mastery, Nuggets, and, for top competitors, the exclusive Greninjite. Eligibility for Season 1’s Ranked Battles is restricted to Pokémon listed in the Lumiose Pokédex numbers 001–227.

While trainers can register creatures ranging in level from 1 to 100, all participants are automatically scaled to Level 50 to ensure balanced competition.

Notably, regional forms are permitted, but trainers may only enlist a single Pokémon per species in their battle team. To participate, Nintendo Switch users must open Pokémon Legends: Z-A, select 'Link Play,' and choose 'Ranked Battles' from the main menu.

To qualify for season rewards, trainers must complete at least one match during the season, regardless of whether they win or lose.

At the end of the season, after logging back into the game, players can redeem their in-game rewards through the same 'Ranked Battles' section. With the first season underway and the Ranked Battles feature live, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is poised to set a new standard for competitive play on the Nintendo Switch platform.

The limited-time availability of Greninjite is expected to drive significant community engagement, marking yet another innovative approach by The Pokémon Company to sustain momentum for its flagship RPG franchise.
