Famitsu Charts: Like a Dragon Debuts Strong as Nintendo Switch Titles Dominate Japanese Sales
This week's Famitsu Japanese sales charts are here, providing key insights into the current gaming landscape across hardware and software.
Japanese weekly sales data, compiled by Famitsu, places SEGA’s latest release, "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii," in a prominent position while Nintendo Switch titles and hardware continue their strong market presence.
SEGA’s flagship RPG, "Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii," made an impressive debut by securing the top two spots.
The PlayStation 5 edition led the chart with 68,219 units sold, closely followed by the PlayStation 4 version, which accounted for 36,942 units.
In its launch week alone, the title combined for over 105,000 sales, reflecting the series’ enduring appeal in Japan and SEGA’s consistent ability to capture audiences with its unique blend of storytelling and action.
The Nintendo Switch dominated the remainder of the top ten, cementing its position as a leading platform in the Japanese market.
"Donkey Kong Country Returns HD," published by Nintendo, took third place with 10,714 weekly sales, bolstering its cumulative total to 206,163.
Long-standing favorites like "Mario Kart 8 Deluxe" added another 10,418 units to its remarkable lifetime total of over 6.25 million in Japan.
Other notable Switch releases holding strong include "Super Mario Party Jamboree" (9,988 units), "Nintendo Switch Sports" (4,659), "Minecraft" (4,424), and "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," which, with 3,855 sales for the week, has now surpassed a staggering 8 million total units sold.
"It Takes Two" also re-entered the chart at ninth, while "Pokémon Scarlet and Violet" rounded out the top ten with 2,932 units, reaching 5.53 million sold overall on Switch.
Despite these successes, hardware sales saw a mild dip, a trend often attributed to seasonal lulls and anticipation for potential new announcements.
The three Switch models collectively sold 39,172 units, with the Switch OLED (27,306 units) leading Nintendo’s hardware offerings.
The PlayStation 5 and its variants sold a total of 13,556 units.
Microsoft's Xbox Series S and X platforms continue to occupy the lower positions in the chart, reflecting the ongoing challenge of penetrating the Japanese console market.
