How to Obtain Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie in Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Complete Kalos Starters Guide

Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the latest release in Nintendo and Game Freak's celebrated franchise, brings a fresh take on the series for the Nintendo Switch.

Set in the dynamic Kalos region, Z-A introduces new gameplay elements while giving longtime fans reasons to revisit familiar favorites.

With Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as the initial starter choices, many players are eager to know if the beloved Kalos starters—Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—can be added to their party.

Thankfully, through dedicated side missions, all three original Kalos starters from Pokémon X and Y are available for trainers to catch within just a few hours of gameplay. To add Chespin to your team in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, progress to the side quest titled "A Feisty Chespin." This mission is located north of Restaurant Le Wow.

Players must defeat Chespin in three consecutive battles to succeed.

For those who selected Tepig as their starter, the battles are especially manageable—using Flame Wheel is a notably effective strategy against Chespin’s Grass-typing. Fennekin is available through the mission called "Get Well, Fennekin." Trainers will first need to visit an herbalist near Café Classe.

From there, the mission sends you to Wild Zone 5 to locate a specific Revitalizing Twig.

While many of the twigs are broken and a formidable Alpha Whirlipede patrols the area, persistent trainers can climb a nearby ladder to recover the required item and then return to Fennekin.

Completing these steps will see Fennekin join your party. Froakie is recruited via the quest "A Challenge from Froakie," found adjacent to the Jaune Pokémon Center.

This mission involves navigating and conquering three scaffolding challenges under a generous time limit.

Each task is straightforward and accessible, and upon successful completion, Froakie will become part of your roster. All three Kalos starters—Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie—will be provided inside standard Poké Balls and registered with the player's Original Trainer designation when added to your team.

Additionally, their final forms—Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja—are among the select Pokémon confirmed to have Mega Evolutions in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

Players seeking to unlock Mega Evolution for these Pokémon must participate in online ranked battles to earn the corresponding Mega Stones, as officially outlined by Game Freak. Pokémon Legends: Z-A reimagines the Kalos region with engaging new adventures on the Nintendo Switch, broadening the appeal for both newcomers and veterans.
