Square Enix has clarified how subscription access and microtransaction payments will work for Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2 as the title moves out of its initial, server-stability-focused free period.

The company confirmed the free subscription window for the full version will end on Monday, September 7, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. local time in each region.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV is available worldwide.

What changes on September 8

Square Enix states that a 30-day free play period will begin for players who register either the Starter Edition or Complete Edition on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

After that 30-day trial concludes, continued access to the Nintendo Switch 2 version requires a paid subscription.

Payment model and FFXIV Coins

The developer has confirmed that subscription fees and optional purchases for the Nintendo Switch 2 version will be paid using FFXIV Coins, which are purchased through the Nintendo eShop.

When playing only on the Nintendo Switch 2 version, all payments must be made with FFXIV Coins.

FFXIV Coins can be applied to subscription fees and account services on the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station, or used to buy optional items on the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store.

Subscription discounts and cross-platform details

Square Enix notes a separate subscription is required for the Nintendo Switch 2 version even if you subscribe on another platform.

However, users with an active FFXIV subscription on another platform can buy the Nintendo Switch 2 subscription at half price, provided the 30-day free play period is not active on another platform at the time of purchase.

If you set up subscription payment before your free play period ends, the fee will be automatically deducted from your FFXIV Coins balance once the trial expires; the discount applies if you still have remaining game time on other platforms at that charge.

Timing, account linking and support

Registration for payment of subscription fees and other account services for the Nintendo Switch 2 version begins Tuesday, September 8 at 3:00 a.m.

(PDT).

Players must link a Nintendo account to their Square Enix account and ensure the registered region on the Square Enix account matches the Nintendo account region.

Once a Nintendo Switch 2 user profile is linked to a Square Enix account, that link cannot be undone or transferred.

Known issue and patch schedule

Square Enix acknowledged a known issue that prevents the launcher from redirecting to the FFXIV Coins purchase screen in the Nintendo eShop; the studio plans to resolve this with Patch 7.56 on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

Until the fix, players can purchase FFXIV Coins by selecting FINAL FANTASY XIV on the HOME menu, pressing +, and choosing Software Information → Nintendo eShop → In-Game Items.

Additional notes

A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV, but members receive a Nintendo Switch Online perk on the Nintendo Switch 2 version that allows one additional aetheryte to be registered as a free teleport destination.
