Square Enix launched Final Fantasy Resonance today, releasing the series' first HD-2D title and a full console-quality RPG adapted from the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius.

The title is available now on the Nintendo eShop and at retail, and Square Enix has published a launch trailer to coincide with the release.

What Final Fantasy Resonance is

Square Enix positions Final Fantasy Resonance as a celebration of both classic and modern Final Fantasy.

Built from the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, the project was not presented as a straight port: the developer says the game has been refined and extensively rebuilt into a console-quality experience that blends retro-inspired HD-2D visuals with contemporary production values.

Gameplay and features

According to Square Enix, Resonance uses a strategic, turn-based battle system that modernizes series conventions.

The game introduces Visions, which are echoes of beloved Final Fantasy characters who join parties with unique skills and customization options.

Combat emphasizes exploiting enemy weaknesses to stagger and break defenses, seizing extra turns, and executing cinematic Resonance attacks tied to the Visions system.

Classic series elements return in HD-2D form, including chocobos, espers and airships, alongside appearances from iconic characters such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light.

The scope of the title includes a main campaign led by the knight Rain of the Kingdom of Grandshelt, who commands an airship squadron and journeys with his childhood friend Laswell through a story of dramatic twists and confrontations.

Endgame content and extras

Final Fantasy Resonance includes optional and challenging side content: a Colosseum with high-risk monster encounters and commensurate rewards, a Chamber of Arms containing foes tied to legendary weapons, and a confrontation with the recurring series boss Ultima Weapon.

Square Enix emphasizes that the world contains secrets and optional content designed for players seeking extended challenges.
