Edia has officially unveiled the Telenet RPG Collection for Nintendo Switch, promising to revive three classic role-playing games from the archives of Telenet Japan.
Scheduled for a November 27, 2024 release in Japan, the collection celebrates a trio of influential Super Famicom RPGs, combining nostalgia and accessibility for modern audiences.
The Telenet RPG Collection features Dark Kingdom, Hiouden: Mamono-tachi tono Chikai, and The Journey Home: Quest for the Throne.
All three games will be available in a standard physical edition priced at 7,480 yen.
Fans and collectors can also opt for a special edition retailing at 10,780 yen, which comes with an original soundtrack and a beautifully curated artbook highlighting the legacy and artistry of these titles.
Dark Kingdom, the first title in the lineup, originally launched in 1994 on the Super Famicom.
Standing out from contemporary fantasy RPGs, Dark Kingdom shifts the perspective, casting players as soldiers within an evil empire, tasked with undertaking missions for the Demon King.
Rather than offering free exploration, the game guides players through narrative-driven assignments, focusing on the journey of rising within the ranks of the antagonist's army.
Hiouden: Mamono-tachi tono Chikai represents a remastered iteration of the 1992 PC-98 original, brought to the Super Famicom in 1994.
Players step into the shoes of Prince Richard, the sole survivor of a kingdom overthrown by a neighboring nation's coup.
Forming alliances with monsters during his exile, Richard embarks on a quest for vengeance and to rescue allies.
The game employs an isometric viewpoint and unique control scheme—leveraging the Super Famicom Mouse for an intuitive, cursor-based interface uncommon in console RPGs at the time.
Rounding out the collection is The Journey Home: Quest for the Throne, an action RPG classic from 1993.
Set amid high seas adventure with pirates and monsters, the game follows a traveling Duke answering the call to save his troubled homeland.
Beyond its fast-paced gameplay, The Journey Home is notable for its music, produced by Yukihiro Takahashi—a renowned musician and member of the legendary Japanese band Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).
Edia's initiative to re-release these Telenet Japan classics on Nintendo Switch underscores the enduring appeal of retro Japanese RPGs, making them more accessible to both dedicated fans and new audiences.
