The agreement pairs Disney’s entertainment IP portfolio with Epic’s platform expertise and Unreal Engine technology to create a multiyear “games and entertainment universe” connected to the free-to-play title Fortnite.
The project will draw from Disney’s wide-ranging intellectual property, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and Avatar, and is intended to offer fans new ways to play, watch, shop and engage with characters and stories.
The initiative is being positioned as a long-term collaboration, with Epic supplying its Unreal Engine and platform experience and Disney providing narrative and IP assets.
Disney Chief Executive Robert A.
Iger framed the move as the company’s largest strategic foray into gaming to date, saying the investment represents a major expansion of Disney’s participation in interactive entertainment and creates significant opportunities for growth across its franchises.
Epic founder and CEO Tim Sweeney described the effort as building an open, interoperable ecosystem that will reinforce connections between Disney’s audiences and Fortnite’s global community.
Fortnite—already a prominent platform for cross-franchise events and collaborations—has previously hosted content based on Marvel and Star Wars, and is available on consoles and platforms including Nintendo Switch as a free-to-play title.
The new Disney–Epic collaboration is intended to expand those possibilities by creating integrated experiences across gameplay, streaming, and commerce tied to Disney’s IP.
Both companies have called the plan a multiyear project and signaled further details will follow as development progresses.
The investment and partnership underscore the growing convergence between major entertainment companies and interactive platforms, and they mark a notable strategic pivot for Disney as it scales its engagement in games.
Publishers, platform holders and developers will be watching closely as this collaboration moves from announcement into development; Disney and Epic have committed to provide updates as the project advances.
