Nintendo Switch 2 Dev Kits Remain Scarce as Developers Rely on Backwards Compatibility As anticipation builds around the Nintendo Switch 2, the availability of development kits for the next-generation platform remains a growing concern for game creators worldwide.

In the wake of Gamescom 2025, industry insiders and prominent analysts have reported significant hurdles for developers hoping to bring their titles to the new device, with many teams being told to focus instead on the current Nintendo Switch hardware and rely on promised backwards compatibility. Digital Foundry, a respected authority in game technology analysis, shared new insights on the situation following this year’s Gamescom event.

John Linneman, speaking for Digital Foundry, revealed that after consulting a broad range of developers, a consistent story has emerged: "Nintendo is advising developers to release their projects for the original Switch and utilize backwards compatibility, as obtaining Switch 2 dev kits remains highly restrictive." According to Linneman, the demand among development teams to create optimized versions for the Switch 2 is strong, but supply of the new hardware for game studios is exceptionally limited. Adding further context, Digital Foundry’s Oliver Mackenzie discussed how even major publishers are facing difficulties securing access to development kits.

Mackenzie noted, "Some established studios, despite their longstanding partnerships with Nintendo, are reportedly excluded from the early Switch 2 development pipeline.

While select independent developers have received kits, it appears that not all AAA studios have been prioritized, highlighting inconsistency in kit distribution." Nintendo has yet to clarify the rationale behind the limited allocation of Switch 2 hardware to development partners.

Historically, Nintendo has maintained close control over pre-launch hardware, often to ensure strategic rollout and minimize leaks, but this current phase appears unusually strict—even by the company’s standards.

As the global gaming community prepares for the Switch 2’s debut, this cautious approach could impact the timing and breadth of next-gen game releases available on day one. Despite these kit shortages, the Nintendo Switch platform remains robust, with record software sales and ongoing excitement for upcoming first-party titles.

Developers are leveraging the promise of backwards compatibility to maintain momentum, ensuring that current Switch fans can experience future releases on both existing and next-generation hardware. As more details emerge in upcoming Nintendo Directs and official statements, the industry will be watching closely for updates on Switch 2 development support.
