Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that a sequel to Sonic Mania remains a possibility, but emphasized that no concrete project is currently underway.

The original Sonic Mania, developed in collaboration with Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and PagodaWest Games and published by Sega, launched on August 15, 2017 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

An expanded physical edition, Sonic Mania Plus, followed on July 17, 2018.

In a recent interview with Game Informer, Iizuka reiterated the close working relationship between Sonic Team and the independent studios behind Sonic Mania.

He said the teams remain in regular contact and socialize outside of work, which he described as an important part of maintaining strong partnerships.

Iizuka added that the external studios have their own business priorities and active projects, and that while Sega would like to collaborate with them again, there is no ongoing Mania sequel in development at this time.

Paraphrasing Iizuka’s remarks: he noted the teams are "still really close," that relationships matter and they frequently meet informally, and that the external developers have other commitments.

He said there is a clear desire on Sega’s part to work with the Mania developers again and that a sequel is not ruled out, but it is not moving forward at present.

Why this matters: Sonic Mania is widely regarded as a high point for 2D Sonic design in recent years, praised for its faithful gameplay, level design and blend of original content with nostalgic elements.

The game’s multi-platform release, including a strong presence on the Nintendo Switch eShop, helped it reach a broad audience across Nintendo hardware and other platforms.

Sega’s continued public acknowledgement of the Mania team keeps the door open for future collaboration, even as the developer landscape and Sega’s internal priorities evolve.

For now, fans should treat Iizuka’s comments as confirmation of interest rather than an announcement.

Any official news on a Sonic Mania sequel or renewed collaboration with Christian Whitehead, Headcannon or PagodaWest Games would come through Sega channels, major outlets such as Nintendo Direct for platform-specific reveals, or updates via the eShop listings and publisher announcements.
