Description

A new book project aiming to immortalize the influential history of Psygnosis, the esteemed British video game developer and publisher, is currently being crowdfunded by French independent publisher Éditions 64k.

Known among gaming enthusiasts and industry veterans, Psygnosis is responsible for iconic titles such as WipEout, Lemmings, and Shadow of the Beast—games that not only defined an era but helped shape the direction of modern video game development. Founded in 1984 as the spiritual successor to Imagine Studios, Psygnosis initially focused on developing software for a range of home computers, including the Atari ST and Commodore Amiga.

The Liverpool-based studio quickly earned a reputation for pushing technological and artistic boundaries, with its early titles such as Barbarian and Brataccas showcasing innovative art design and ambitious gameplay.

As the developer evolved, it played a crucial role in publishing standout hits like Lemmings and Shadow of the Beast, collaborating with other studios to bring these games to a broader audience. In 1993, Psygnosis became part of Sony Computer Entertainment, a move that aligned the company with the development of groundbreaking titles for the original Sony PlayStation.

Following its acquisition, Psygnosis helped launch legendary franchises, most notably the futuristic racing series WipEout.

The studio's creative output under Sony's wing also included acclaimed titles like the Colony Wars series, further cementing its status as a trailblazer in the industry. However, in 1999, the Psygnosis brand was retired as the studio was restructured and renamed SCE Studio Liverpool.

This new era saw the team continue their impressive run with several Formula One titles and additional WipEout sequels.

Studio Liverpool remained a prominent developer for Sony platforms until its closure in 2012, after which several former staff members established the independent studio Firesprite. The upcoming book, titled "Psygnosis: Games People Play Tome One," promises an in-depth look at the legacy of this iconic studio.

Through exclusive interviews, archival material, and expert analysis, the book documents the journey from early projects like Brataccas to household names that captured the imagination of gamers worldwide.

According to the publisher, "Psygnosis has left a lasting mark on the industry, fusing technological innovation, artistic creativity, and gaming culture—continually pushing the boundaries of what is possible in video games." Supporters of the Éditions 64k crowdfunding campaign will also receive a limited-edition T-shirt featuring the legendary Psygnosis logo, designed by acclaimed artist Roger Dean.

The campaign is live through May 11, with potential backers able to secure their copy by visiting the Éditions 64k website. For gaming industry professionals, retro enthusiasts, and those passionate about the evolution of game development, this upcoming book is set to become an essential historical resource on one of the most significant studios in video game history.
