A new mod called Better Super Mario Sunshine Online has been released for Super Mario Sunshine on PC, enabling up to 10 players to play together using the Dolphin GameCube/Wii emulator.

The mod is developed by Daytendo 64, a member of the Super Mario Elements modding community, and the download is hosted on the modding site GameBanana.

Super Mario Sunshine, originally developed by Nintendo EAD for the Nintendo GameCube, has an active modding scene that has produced online multiplayer solutions and gameplay expansions.

Better Super Mario Sunshine Online is intended for Windows users running Dolphin and requires legal copies of the NTSC-U version of the original game.

Daytendo 64 has publicly positioned this release as an alternative to the existing Super Mario Sunshine Online (SMSO) mod.

In commentary released alongside development footage, Daytendo 64 explained that inconsistent updates and persistent connection and bug issues with the earlier SMSO project motivated the creation of a new build that aims to be more actively maintained and stable.

Key features of Better Super Mario Sunshine Online

- Up to 10-player online multiplayer via Dolphin on Windows

- Co-op story mode with synchronized collectibles: shines, blue coins, plaza state and story progress are kept in sync across players, including late joiners

- Hide-and-seek mode with host or random seeker assignment, configurable grace period, and randomized stage selection

- 15 fully custom characters visible in promotional footage, including alternate skins such as Sonic, Shadow and Waluigi

- Quality-of-life improvements over prior community mods

A release trailer for the mod was published on YouTube and showcases the new game modes and custom character roster.

The Super Mario Elements community has promoted the mod as a social way to play Super Mario Sunshine together.

Technical requirements and notes

Players must supply their own legal NTSC-U copy of Super Mario Sunshine to use the mod.

The mod is designed for Dolphin on Windows; players commonly use RadminVPN for online connectivity, although standard port forwarding is also an option.

This project is a fan-created modification and is not an official Nintendo release for Nintendo Switch, eShop, or announced via Nintendo Direct.

For readers already involved in the Mario Sunshine mod community, Better Super Mario Sunshine Online is available now on GameBanana for download and installation instructions.
