The Sims and The Sims 2 Receive Official PC Legacy Collection Re-Release, Console Versions Not Included
Electronic Arts (EA) has officially rereleased The Sims and The Sims 2, two of the most influential simulation games in history, as part of the new Sims Legacy Collection for PC.
As of January 31, 2025, these beloved titles are now available digitally on Steam, the EA App, and the Epic Games Store (EGS) for the first time in years, reinvigorating access for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
The announcement marks a major milestone for both The Sims and The Sims 2, which had been difficult to purchase legally following the discontinuation of their original physical and digital editions.
Fans can now choose between The Sims Legacy Collection, The Sims 2 Legacy Collection, or a bundled Sims 25th Birthday Bundle—all exclusive for PC platforms, and each offered at a special discounted launch price.
However, players hoping to revisit these classics on consoles, such as the Nintendo Switch, will have to wait.
EA has confirmed that no console versions are planned at this time, restricting the re-releases strictly to PC users.
This exclusivity has disappointed a portion of the fanbase, given the historical popularity of these games across various gaming communities, including those on Nintendo platforms.
In a rewritten statement based on EA’s announcement, the publisher emphasized that making these iconic simulation experiences available again was a priority, but currently, only PC users will have access: 'Bringing The Sims and The Sims 2 back to a modern audience is an exciting landmark for the franchise, though at this time, the releases are exclusive to PC.'
This strategic focus reflects the technical and interface considerations behind such releases—the gameplay design of The Sims titles is notably optimized for mouse and keyboard, complicating direct ports to console systems like the Nintendo Switch, where touch and controller support would require substantial redevelopment.
With speculation circulating about the future of Nintendo hardware, especially with the anticipated features of the rumored Switch 2 and possible mouse functionality in its Joy-Con controllers, some are hopeful for future console adaptations.
Still, there has been no official confirmation or timeline from EA regarding ports to Switch, Switch 2, or any other console.
Players seeking a Sims-style experience on Nintendo platforms can currently turn to titles such as the MySims Cozy Bundle, which remains available for the Nintendo Switch ecosystem.
In the meantime, fans eager to dive back into the early days of The Sims franchise will need to do so via PC—including portable solutions like the Steam Deck, which offers a compromise for gaming on the go.
The Sims Legacy Collection and The Sims 2 Legacy Collection mark the latest in a series of legacy game returns made possible by digital distribution.
As EA continues to support one of gaming’s most recognizable franchises with new content and retrospectives, all eyes remain on the possibility of a broader platform rollout.
For now, PC remains the exclusive home for these classic life simulation titles.
