Atari and acclaimed indie developer Jeff Minter have announced 'I, Robot', a vibrant reimagining of the 1984 arcade cabinet classic, now set to launch on the Nintendo Switch in Spring 2025.
Fans of retro gaming and modern psychedelic visuals can look forward to another collaboration between Llamasoft and Atari, after their well-received releases such as 'Tempest 4000' and 'Akka Arrh'.
The digital edition will be available via the Nintendo eShop, aligning with the Switch’s strong library of indie and arcade-style games.
'I, Robot' brings Minter's unmistakable creative vision to the forefront, merging classic gameplay with modern audiovisual flair.
The original 'I, Robot', released by Atari in the mid-80s, was groundbreaking with its early use of 3D graphics and abstract design.
Minter’s new version leans into these roots, offering 55 levels that blend platforming and arena challenges, punctuated by distinctive tube-shooter bonus stages.
Enhanced by Llamasoft’s signature mind-bending visuals and a procedural soundtrack that evolves alongside player performance, the title aims to captivate both veteran players and newcomers.
Atari’s vice president of games, Ethan Sterns, praised Minter’s enduring impact on game design and independent development.
In a recent statement, Sterns noted, “Jeff Minter has maintained the true spirit of indie game development throughout his 45-year career, consistently focusing on projects that fuel his creative passion, working closely with his small team, and bringing a distinct personal style to every game.
This reimagining of an Atari arcade classic, centered on a rebellious robot protagonist, is quintessentially Minter.”
Competitive players will appreciate the inclusion of online leaderboards, inviting the global Nintendo Switch audience to test their skills across every stage.
The game’s initial release will be digital, but given Atari’s established history with physical Switch releases, a boxed edition is certainly anticipated by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
'I, Robot' strengthens the ongoing partnership between Llamasoft and Atari, cementing Jeff Minter’s reputation for breathing new life into classic arcade properties while introducing them to a new generation of gamers.
With a targeted Spring 2025 release, the game automatically becomes one of the most anticipated indie titles in the upcoming Nintendo Switch lineup.
Stay tuned for more updates on the exact release date and any future announcements from Llamasoft, Atari, and Jeff Minter regarding 'I, Robot' and other Nintendo Switch eShop releases.
