Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surpass 6 Million Units, Breaking Launch Records
Nintendo has reached a major milestone with the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the highly anticipated successor to the original Switch.
In the company’s latest financial report, released on the morning of August 1st, Nintendo revealed that more than 6 million units of the Switch 2 have been sold worldwide since its official launch on June 5th, 2025.
This performance marks one of the strongest starts for any modern gaming console and further cements Nintendo’s place at the top of the hardware market.
Mario Kart World Sets High Attach Rate
In addition to impressive hardware sales, Nintendo reported that Mario Kart World, its flagship racing title for Switch 2, has achieved remarkable success.
Within the same period, Mario Kart World has sold 5.82 million copies, resulting in an attach rate of approximately 96%.
This figure demonstrates the immense popularity of the franchise and indicates that virtually every Switch 2 owner has picked up the game alongside their new console.
While Nintendo does not break down sales by physical and digital units, the high software attach rate suggests significant interest in Switch 2 bundles, many of which include Mario Kart World.
However, demand appears so robust that the game’s sales figures far outpace typical bundling numbers, showcasing Mario Kart World as an essential companion for the new hardware.
Switch 2 Outpaces PlayStation 5 Launch Sales
Comparisons have quickly arisen between the Switch 2’s launch and prior console launches from competitors.
According to VGC, Sony’s PlayStation 5 shipped approximately 3.4 million units within its first four weeks on the market and 4.5 million by the seventh week.
The Switch 2 has already outperformed these figures, even as industry observers note that the PS5 launch faced supply constraints due to the global pandemic.
Nintendo’s more accessible launch price is also seen as a contributing factor to the Switch 2's impressive early results.
Despite Shattering Records, Nintendo Maintains Conservative Forecast
Despite breaking records, Nintendo has kept its official sales forecast for the fiscal year unchanged, projecting Switch 2 sales to reach 15 million units by March 2026.
Dr.
Serkan Toto, CEO of consultancy firm Kantan Games, spoke with VGC and acknowledged the results as a reflection of pent-up demand among Nintendo fans, eight years after the original Switch's debut.
Dr.
Toto noted that Nintendo’s tradition of providing cautious forecasts is intended to manage investor expectations unless supply chain issues prompt a revision.
Looking Ahead
With a robust launch and positive momentum, the Nintendo Switch 2 appears to be on track for sustained commercial success.
Any concerns that its higher launch price might impact sales have been laid to rest as Nintendo’s latest hardware continues to outperform and rewrite industry records.
As anticipated first-party titles and additional hardware bundles arrive, the Switch 2’s strong entry signals a promising new era for both Nintendo and its global fanbase.
