Description

Nintendo Switch 2 has achieved a record-breaking launch in Japan, solidifying its position as the country's fastest-selling gaming console to date.

Developed and distributed by Nintendo, the hybrid system debuted with stunning numbers that have already eclipsed historic launches, including that of Sony's iconic PlayStation 2.

The console’s exceptional momentum highlights Nintendo’s continued influence and dominance in the Japanese video game hardware market. When Nintendo Switch 2 launched, it sold a remarkable 947,931 units—surpassing the previous launch record of 630,552 units held by the PlayStation 2.

Now, following its second week on sale, new figures reveal the Switch 2’s continued strong performance.

As of June 16, combined sales have reached 1,101,136 units in Japan alone, according to official sales trackers. These numbers not only affirm the popularity of the Nintendo Switch 2 but also highlight Nintendo’s ability to generate sustained consumer demand for new hardware.

Despite a natural slowdown after its blockbuster opening week, the Switch 2 has already outsold the combined lifetime Japanese sales of the entire Xbox Series family, which includes the Xbox Series X (320,762 units), Xbox Series S (337,811 units), and Xbox Series X Digital Edition (20,854 units).

The device also moved ahead of PlayStation 5 Pro’s Japanese lifetime sales, which stand at 221,181 units. Below is a summary of unit sales in Japan from June 9th to June 16th, as well as cumulative lifetime sales: 1.

Switch 2 – 153,205 weekly / 1,101,136 lifetime 2.

PlayStation 4 – 22 weekly / 7,929,650 lifetime While Microsoft’s Xbox Series consoles have historically struggled to gain traction in the Japanese market, Nintendo's rapid sales milestone is nonetheless a testament to the company's market power.

Nintendo Switch 2’s launch trajectory suggests continued strong performance, particularly as consumer interest remains high following recent announcements at Nintendo Direct showcases and a robust selection on the eShop. Although the Switch 2 still trails behind the PlayStation 5’s impressive lifetime sales in Japan, which have reached 5,702,730 units, industry analysts and observers note the Switch 2’s explosive debut might allow it to catch up sooner than anticipated. With the Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo is once again setting new standards for hardware launches in Japan, continuing its legacy of market leadership and innovation in the gaming industry.
