Waveling Island arrives as a new creature-collecting sim from the team responsible for Mega Man–inspired indie releases Berserk Boy and Berserk B.I.T.S. The project is led by developer Zu Ehtisham and was revealed alongside an initial trailer that emphasizes hand-drawn pixel art and a Game Boy Advance–era aesthetic.

The developer has confirmed the game is planned for PC and Xbox Series X|S, with a Steam page live; no release date has been announced.

What Waveling Island offers

Waveling Island positions players as a castaway who washes ashore on a densely populated tropical island.

The title blends exploration, resource gathering, crafting and creature management: players recruit local wildlife known as Wavelings and use those creatures' unique abilities to collect resources, traverse varied biomes and tackle environmental puzzles.

The announcement notes a branching main campaign shaped by player decisions, alongside optional activities such as base-building, random battles and quest-like interactions with island inhabitants to unlock special items.

Gameplay and influences

The trailer and developer commentary draw frequent comparisons to Nintendo franchises—most notably Pokémon and Pikmin—based on the game's creature collection and cursor-directed party mechanics.

Industry responses have highlighted those similarities, though the developer describes a personal lineage of influences spanning multiple titles and genres.

In an email to the press, lead developer Zu Ehtisham explained that the game's combat system evolved from an earlier prototype of an RPG autobattler.

He said he had been playing Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Pikmin in rotation while prototyping, and was particularly interested in how Pikmin respond differently to situations and the overlap between commanding Pikmin and the more direct control approaches seen in recent Pokémon entries.

Ehtisham added that Waveling Island's battle mechanics are built on that early prototype and that the project fits into the same universe as Berserk B.I.T.S, which already featured over 100 creatures.

He also noted that the game's relaxed crafting and island-life elements came later in development.

Early prototypes explored quieter experiences inspired by titles like A Short Hike and Animal Crossing before those ideas merged with the combat and creature systems now on display.

Platforms and availability

Waveling Island is currently listed for PC and Xbox Series X|S, and has a Steam page.

The developer has not provided a release date or detailed launch window.

The game's retro pixel presentation and creature-focused design may appeal to fans of handheld-era aesthetics and Nintendo-style creature management, and it will be watched closely by players who follow indie releases on platforms such as Steam and the Nintendo eShop.
