Positioned as a stylistic exploration of pixel-based visuals, the announcement expands on the game’s visual direction, playable regions, new characters, and a summon-driven combat feature dubbed “Visions.” Final Fantasy Resonance is confirmed for release on October 22, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, with pre-orders available now through major retailers including Amazon and GameStop.
Visual direction and worldbuilding
Square Enix framed the game around a simple creative prompt, asking how Final Fantasy might look if it had continued to push the limits of pixel art in a modern HD-2D presentation.
The developer’s materials focus heavily on visual design and setting.
Two principal locations are named: Dilmagia (also called Machinopolis), presented as an industrial, airship-focused city and the birthplace of the airship; and Olderion (referred to as Aquapolis), an oceanic capital city protected by a coalition known as the Warders of the Waders, alongside figures described as the “Maiden of the Water” and an esper called the “God of Water.” Longtime series character Cid is noted as having once hailed from Dilmagia.
New characters
Square Enix’s press materials introduce several new playable and narrative characters.
Engineer Lid is described as an airship engineer from Dirnado who learned her trade helping her family and rising to notable technical skill.
Nichol is presented as a strategist from the Olderion Federation, raised in a family of wardens and committed to defending his homeland.
The release also details two members of the Sworn Six of Palandia: Veritas of the Heavens, who fights with lance techniques, and Veritas of the Waters, who uses a more fluid combat style.
Visions and summons
A key gameplay element is “Visions,” which function as summonable allies drawn from past Final Fantasy entries.
The announced Visions include Tidus, Squall, Cecil, Bartz, and Zidane, with Square Enix noting additional characters and some exclusive inclusions such as Aileen (originating from Final Fantasy Brave Exvius).
Traditional summons like Ifrit, Shiva, and Titan are also confirmed to appear.
