Kingdom Hearts remains one of Square Enix’s most enduring franchises, but its sprawling chronology and cross-company collaborations have made narrative consistency increasingly difficult to manage.

The original Kingdom Hearts launched on PlayStation 2 in 2002, and the series has since spanned consoles and handhelds—from Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS entries to PlayStation and Xbox releases and a PC debut—while also spawning remasters and spin-offs.

Creative director Tetsuya Nomura has confirmed in a recent interview that Square Enix has formally added a dedicated lore master to the Kingdom Hearts IV team to help keep the story cohesive as the franchise grows and expands into new media.

Nomura explained that as the cast and scope of the series have grown, maintaining a single, consistent narrative has become more challenging, especially with more external partners involved.

He said the newly announced anime project and other outside collaborators increased the need to communicate settings and scenarios clearly to third parties.

To address this, Square Enix recruited an experienced staff member who previously compiled and organized the settings for the Kingdom Hearts χ series to serve as a proofreader for Kingdom Hearts IV.

According to Nomura, the individual’s role is explicitly editorial: they assemble reference materials, create diagrams to clarify story beats for partner organizations such as Disney, and verify that new scripts do not conflict with established lore.

Nomura emphasized that this team member’s work is not composition or story-writing for the series but focused on proofreading and continuity checks to prevent contradictions with past entries.

This move follows a history of cross-platform releases and cooperative projects within the franchise.

Kingdom Hearts III launched for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in January 2019 and later became available on PC in 2021, while the rhythm-action spin-off Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory released on Nintendo Switch in November 2020.

As Square Enix coordinates Kingdom Hearts IV development and external projects like the announced anime, a centralized continuity role aims to reduce friction between internal teams and partners and to present a clearer account of the series’ complex settings.

Nomura’s confirmation offers a concrete step by Square Enix to safeguard narrative continuity across multiple projects and platforms.

The lore master/proofreader will work as a reference point for writers, developers, and external collaborators to ensure Kingdom Hearts’ long-running narrative remains internally consistent as the franchise continues to evolve.
