The announcement positions Revelation as the climactic, final chapter of the larger Final Fantasy VII remake project and highlights expanded combat, exploration and high-stakes story beats.
In its press materials, Square Enix described the return of the game series’ enormous planetary guardians, known as Weapons.
The publisher said these colossal foes rise to defend the planet during a global crisis and cause indiscriminate, catastrophic destruction to landscapes and settlements alike.
The studio added that Weapons — a late-game element in the original Final Fantasy VII — have been reimagined as signature, ultra-challenging endgame encounters that pay homage to their original forms.
The gamescom trailer also showcased a number of gameplay and systems updates.
Square Enix revealed the powerful new Summon Typhon, along with expanded open-world traversal options such as parachutes, grappling hooks and Chocobo mounts.
The studio introduced a new FITS system that outfits protagonists with role-specific costumes: examples shown include Cloud and Tifa wearing Warrior and Black Mage FITS.
According to the publisher, FITS grant unique abilities and specialised roles that evoke classic Final Fantasy job systems, adding new strategic layers to combat.
On story and scale, Square Enix framed Revelation as the series’ most ambitious chapter yet.
The publisher outlined a finale in which Cloud and his allies face Sephiroth while the planet teeters on the brink of annihilation — meteors darkening the sky and elemental chaos sweeping continents — as the party fights to conclude a legendary conflict.
Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be available both at retail and digitally on the Nintendo eShop for Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2027.
With revamped boss encounters, fresh summons, new traversal tools and the FITS system, Square Enix is positioning Revelation as a definitive conclusion to the remake project and a major title for Nintendo’s next-generation hardware.
