Kirby Air Ride: Director Masahiro Sakurai Reveals Origins of Main Theme Song Lyrics

In a recent developer interview published on Nintendo’s official website, Masahiro Sakurai, director of the acclaimed Kirby Air Ride, disclosed for the first time that he personally wrote the lyrics to the game’s iconic main theme song.

This revelation comes nearly two decades after the GameCube exclusive’s original launch and offers fresh perspective into Sakurai’s creative process within the Kirby franchise.

Under the direction of Masahiro Sakurai—a prominent figure at HAL Laboratory and the creative mind behind both the Kirby and Super Smash Bros.

franchises—the game distinguished itself in Nintendo’s game lineup due to its accessible controls and multiplayer features.

The music, integral to the game’s enduring charm, holds a special place in fans’ hearts, but few knew Sakurai’s direct involvement extended beyond direction into songwriting. During the interview, Sakurai explained his previously undisclosed contribution, stating that he intentionally kept his role as lyricist under wraps.

He shared, “I haven’t spoken about writing the theme song’s lyrics before, as it was important not to strongly associate the world of Kirby Air Ride with a single person.

I feel that attaching too much of an individual identity risks narrowing the imaginative potential of the game’s universe.” He elaborated on the creative process, noting the complexities and duality within his songwriting.

"The lyrics I crafted hold two layers—the outward theme is about the exhilaration of riding together with machines, while a deeper layer reflects a character’s desire to reclaim lost freedom.

Our composer, Iwadare, provided three versions of the song, and ultimately, we decided to transform the third version into a ballad inspired by the character Zorah.

However, developing this track into a fully realized song was a challenging journey, as I wanted the lyrics to bridge contrasting emotions.

This approach was new for me, but it felt like a unique and worthwhile challenge, so I asked Iwadare to take it on with me." Sakurai also touched on his broader philosophy regarding the music of Kirby Air Ride, emphasizing his intention to make the songs accessible and enjoyable, especially for young players who might wish to sing along.

This aligns with the overall family-friendly spirit of the Kirby series and highlights the enduring appeal of its audio and gameplay design. Kirby Air Ride continues to be recognized as a standout GameCube title and remains a touchstone in Nintendo’s catalog.

Helmed by Masahiro Sakurai, the game’s fusion of innovative mechanics and memorable music cements its legacy not just among fans, but also as a defining moment in Nintendo’s rich history of character-driven titles.

As more insights from developers like Sakurai surface, they deepen our appreciation for the artistry and careful thought behind classic Nintendo experiences.
