40th Anniversary with Museum Events, Movie Reveal, and More at Nintendo Direct
Nintendo marked a significant milestone during its most recent Nintendo Direct, dedicating a large portion of the presentation to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.
The enduring legacy of Mario—the beloved platforming mascot—will reach its major milestone on September 13, 2025.
While fans waiting for a brand-new 3D Mario game didn’t receive such an announcement, the event was far from short of surprises, offering a comprehensive look at special projects, tributes, and new experiences planned to honor the franchise’s rich history on Nintendo Switch and beyond.
Museum Tickets and Special Light Displays Announced
Kicking off the celebratory lineup, Shigeru Miyamoto, creative visionary and Mario’s original creator, officially announced that the Nintendo Museum in Japan will serve as a hub for anniversary festivities.
From now through September 2026, visitors to the Nintendo Museum will receive exclusive, Mario 40th anniversary-themed tickets marking this occasion.
Additionally, the museum is set to host a special light display starting December 2025, designed to immerse fans in decades of Super Mario magic through vivid and interactive visuals.
Kyoto Marathon 2026 to Feature Mario as Official Mascot
Nintendo is also extending its 40th anniversary celebrations into the wider community by sponsoring the Kyoto Marathon 2026.
In a playful tribute, Mario himself will make an appearance to support participants.
Each marathon runner will don a special race bib showcasing the Nintendo logo, blending athletic achievement with the playful spirit that defines the Super Mario franchise.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Official Teaser and Returning Cast
One of the most high-profile announcements was the unveiling of the first teaser trailer for the upcoming Mario movie sequel, now officially titled "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie."
