Return To Blacktooth, the modern sequel that channels the spirit of the classic Head Over Heels, will receive official Amiga CD32 controller support, publisher Thalamus Digital has confirmed.
The announcement follows a recent review praising Colin Porch’s follow-up for building on the mechanics and charm of Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond’s original game.
The title currently exists as an Amiga and Atari ST release and has drawn attention from retro gaming fans and preservation-minded players.
Thalamus Digital told reporters that an Amiga CD32 edition of Return To Blacktooth is actively in development.
The publisher said that once the CD32 build is complete, the development team will patch CD32 joypad support into the currently available Amiga version of the game.
In journalistic terms: Thalamus confirmed an Amiga CD32 release is underway, and the company will deliver controller compatibility to the existing Amiga release via a subsequent software update.
Why the CD32 matters: Commodore launched the CD32 in 1993 as a console-focused variant of the Amiga 1200.
Marketed as a 32-bit multimedia console, the system shipped with a joypad and removed the keyboard, floppy drive and certain I/O ports found on standard Amiga 1200 machines.
The CD32 had a short commercial lifespan and was withdrawn from sale in 1994, but it retains a devoted community because of its native Amiga compatibility and unique controller.
Developer and legacy context
Colin Porch’s Return To Blacktooth has been framed by reviewers as an affectionate and mechanically faithful sequel to Head Over Heels, the 1987 isometric platform-puzzle originally created by Jon Ritman and Bernie Drummond.
Thalamus Digital, a publisher with historical ties to classic Commodore-era releases and a modern revival of the brand, is overseeing the current distribution and platform support.
The team’s pledge to add CD32 pad support underscores an ongoing commitment to authentic Amiga-era playstyles and hardware compatibility.
What this means for players
Owners of the Amiga version will not need to buy a separate product to get CD32 controller support: Thalamus has stated that the CD32-compatible controls will be distributed as a patch for the existing Amiga release once the CD32 edition is finalized.
This approach preserves the current Amiga install base and makes it straightforward for retro enthusiasts who use original CD32 hardware or accurate emulation to play with the authentic joypad layout.
Return To Blacktooth continues to be a notable example of modern development that respects and extends classic Amiga design.
With official CD32 controller support confirmed, the title further cements its appeal to collectors and fans of retro platforms, while demonstrating active publisher support for legacy hardware compatibility.
