SEGA announced that Sonic Frontiers has sold more than five million copies worldwide since its initial release, a significant milestone for the franchise.
Developed by Sonic Team and originally released in November 2022 across multiple platforms including the Nintendo Switch, the game has continued to receive post-launch updates and new editions, most recently a Definitive Edition released for the Nintendo Switch 2 in June.
Sonic Frontiers casts players as Sonic racing to recover the missing Chaos Emeralds after becoming stranded on the Starfall Islands, a chain of five expansive open-zone overworlds.
SEGA and Sonic Team have expanded the base game through content updates and bonus packs: the “Final Horizon” campaign adds playable runs as Tails, Amy, and Knuckles with distinct abilities and combat styles, while additional updates such as “Sonic’s Birthday Bash” and “Sights, Sound, and Speed” have supplied new challenges, music, and cosmetics.
SEGA summarized the package as a comprehensive 3D open-zone adventure that combines exploration, platforming, and an action-oriented combat system.
The game’s combat allows players to link dodges, parries, counters, and combos and to invest in a skill tree for strategic upgrades.
The Cyloop ability is highlighted as a key mechanic used to engage large enemies and colossal titans across the islands.
The publisher also detailed previously released bonus content included with the broader editions: the Explorer’s Treasure Box, a “Monster Hunter” collaboration pack, Sonic Adventure 2 shoes, a Holiday Cheer Suit, plus a digital art book and mini soundtrack.
To mark the five-million-sales milestone, SEGA made the Sonic Adventure 2 shoes available to all players; the item had previously been distributed as a free incentive for signing up to SEGA’s newsletter.
