Panic 64 announced: Spicy Gyro's 1998-style 3D platformer coming in 2027

Spicy Gyro has announced Panic 64, a new 3D platformer that reimagines the studio’s indie mascot for polygonal gameplay.

The follow-up to 2022’s side-scrolling Panic the Porcupine shifts the series into fully 3D levels and is currently scheduled for a 2027 release window.

A Steam page is live now for players who want to wishlist the title; no additional platform confirmations—such as a Nintendo Switch or eShop listing—have been announced.

The developer framed Panic 64 as a deliberately late-1990s-inspired, “next-generation” platformer that leans on the visual and mechanical hallmarks of iconic 3D mascot games from that era.

The announcement trailer runs roughly one minute and leans into those influences, including obvious nods to Sonic R, Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario 64.

The trailer also features a playful sequence that echoes the truck-and-orca chase beats familiar from the Sonic Adventure games.

Spicy Gyro’s official synopsis positions series villain Dr. Proventriculus as the antagonist, with Panic tasked to tackle new fully polygonal hazards across varied stages.

The studio’s feature list—presented in promotional materials—details core design elements: eight linear stages with two missions apiece, four boss encounters, and a grading-and-scoring system aimed at speedrunners and completionists.

The game will include environmental power-ups obtained by interacting with in-world CRTs—examples called out by the developer include an “egg magnet” and a “boost soda.”

On movement and control, Spicy Gyro highlights Panic’s new Quill Qrush for precise platforming and a drift mechanic intended to provide boosts through tight corners.

The team also jokes that the intentional use of blurry, low-resolution textures is part of the game’s aesthetic, referencing the era the title emulates.

Panic 64 marks a notable shift for Spicy Gyro from 2D sidescrolling design toward a nostalgia-driven 3D approach.

With its 2027 target date and a Steam wishlist available, the project will be one to watch for fans of retro-inspired platformers and those tracking indie takes on classic mascot-era gameplay.

For now, official details on additional platforms, release date windows, or further gameplay demonstrations await future updates from the developer.
