Ratatan Switch Version Canceled: Developer Prioritizes Nintendo Switch 2 and Next-Gen Platforms

Indie rhythm-action fans awaiting Ratatan on Nintendo Switch were dealt a blow this week, as the game's developer, Ratata Arts, announced the official cancellation of the title for both the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 platforms.

Instead, the team has shifted its focus to upcoming and current-generation consoles, with Ratatan now set to release on Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

Initially highlighted during an early 2024 Indie World Showcase, Ratatan's anticipated Nintendo Switch version was conspicuously absent from recent updates, leading to speculation around its fate.

Confirmation arrived via the project’s official Kickstarter page, where Ratata Arts addressed backers and fans directly about the change in platform strategy.

The developer underscored a commitment to delivering the highest possible quality by narrowing down the supported platforms.

According to the update, Ratata Arts and publisher Game Source Entertainment evaluated several methods and options for supporting legacy hardware.

After extensive discussions, it was determined that the number of potential sales on Nintendo Switch and PS4 would not offset the licensing costs required for those platforms.

The team stated, "The projected number of units we could sell for legacy hardware would not justify the licensing fees necessary to complete those SKUs." This pragmatic approach is designed to make optimal use of their indie development resources and to ensure Ratatan achieves maximum quality, particularly as the title will feature full online capabilities.

Moving forward, Ratatan will be available for Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Steam.

The developer expressed regret for not being able to accommodate all backers’ platform preferences and indicated that support tickets would be available for those affected.

They also assured fans that, while they are currently limiting the release to a manageable set of platforms, they would continue to re-examine the possibility of bringing Ratatan to other systems in the future.

Ratatan is scheduled to launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on July 16, 2026.

With the focus now squarely on the latest hardware, Ratata Arts joins a growing list of developers prioritizing next-generation platforms to deliver smoother, richer gameplay experiences.

This strategical pivot reflects broader industry trends as the Nintendo Switch approaches the sunset of its lifecycle and anticipation builds for its successor’s debut.
