Ratatan Cancels Nintendo Switch 1 Release: Focus Shifts to Switch 2 and Current-Gen Platforms

Ratatan, the highly anticipated spiritual successor to Patapon from indie developer Ratata Arts, will no longer launch on the original Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 4 platforms.

Initially revealed in 2023 with a planned release for the Switch 1, Ratatan’s platform roadmap has now shifted to focus on next-generation hardware, as highlighted in April's Indie World Showcase.

The developer made this update official via a Kickstarter announcement, aligning with current industry trends favoring new consoles and the next-gen gaming experience.

According to Ratata Arts’ latest statement, the decision was made to ensure the “best possible user experience” while pragmatically managing development resources across multiple platforms.

The team cited both technical limitations and a need to balance quality with reach, particularly for a small indie studio tasked with delivering a full-featured online title.

"After reviewing several avenues for supporting legacy platforms, we found that the expected sales on older hardware did not justify the additional licensing fees and development overhead," Ratata Arts stated.

Consequently, development for Switch 1 and PlayStation 4 has been discontinued.

Players and backers who previously expected a Nintendo Switch 1 or PlayStation 4 version can now opt for a replacement copy on Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X.

The studio has committed to opening support tickets for anyone unable to transition to the available platforms, ensuring that no backer’s support goes unresolved.

In collaboration with publisher Game Source Entertainment, Ratata Arts explained the difficult choice: “Focusing on a manageable set of platforms is the best way to deliver a game that meets both player expectations and our development standards.” The developer expressed regret for not being able to support every platform requested by the community, but emphasized the priority of achieving the highest possible quality for Ratatan’s launch.

Ratatan remains one of the most anticipated rhythm-action projects emerging from the indie scene, strongly leveraging its Patapon legacy.

The decision to limit the launch to current-generation hardware echoes broader industry shifts as developers seek to maximize technical capabilities and online performance—especially crucial for a game tapping into real-time online play.

For backers and fans, Ratatan will be available on Nintendo Switch 2, Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X.

Ratata Arts has not ruled out exploring expanded platform support in the future, but for now the focus is clear: delivering the best Ratatan experience on the latest hardware.

Further updates and support options will be communicated via the project’s official channels and Kickstarter page.
