Nitrome Develops Mouse Work for Nintendo Switch 2 Without Access to a Development Kit
Nitrome, the acclaimed indie developer behind hits like Shovel Knight Dig and Bomb Chicken, is once again pushing the boundaries of innovation.
Their latest title, Mouse Work, has generated substantial buzz since its announcement for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
Showcased in gaming headlines and trending on social media, Mouse Work is especially notable for its creative use of the Joy-Con 2's new mouse-like control scheme across a vibrant collection of minigames.
Yet, in an impressive demonstration of resourcefulness, Nitrome revealed that development on Mouse Work began without the benefit of an official Nintendo Switch 2 development kit.
Instead, the team devised a "Frankenstein" hardware solution that allowed them to test and refine the unique control mechanics central to Mouse Work.
In a post on social media, Nitrome appealed to Nintendo for access to the proper hardware, highlighting the challenges—and successes—of working under such unconventional circumstances.
The team expressed gratitude for their work-around, noting it was less than ideal but effective enough to keep development on track.
Mouse Work aims to seize the launch window of the Nintendo Switch 2, which officially releases on June 5, 2025.
While a specific release date for Mouse Work itself has yet to be announced, the development team has committed to releasing the game soon after the hardware debut.
The enthusiasm for this release is fueled not only by Nitrome’s proven track record but also by the game’s energetic trailer, which showcased rapid-fire minigames reminiscent of the beloved WarioWare series.
Emphasis is placed on the next-generation Joy-Con 2 controls, with clear gameplay inspirations from fan favorites such as Pico Park and Part Time UFO.
Mouse Work’s official reveal has been greeted with excitement from both industry observers and the gaming community.
Nitrome has teased fans with promises of additional minigames and features, all of which are designed to take full advantage of what the new Joy-Con 2 controllers can do.
The game is anticipated to be a standout offering on the eShop as the Switch 2 lineup rolls out.
Nitrome’s creative development process, working around technical limitations and hardware shortages, stands as a testament to the ingenuity driving indie game development for Nintendo platforms.
As fans await further details and the eventual hands-on experience, Mouse Work is set to exemplify the exciting innovation possible on the Nintendo Switch 2.
