Description

Nintendo announced today that starting August 3rd, 2025, the retail prices for the original Nintendo Switch hardware and select Switch 2 accessories will see an increase, marking an unusual move in the company’s eight-year hardware cycle.

This adjustment, described by Nintendo as a response to ongoing "market conditions," will not affect the newly released Switch 2 console or its software, at least for the immediate future. The price changes impact several configurations of the Nintendo Switch system currently available at major retailers, including Target, which has already updated its listings to reflect the new pricing.

The Switch OLED model, previously offered at $349.99, will be raised to $399.99—a $50 increase.

The standard Nintendo Switch will be priced at $339.99, up from the prior $299.99 tag, while the versatile Switch Lite will see its cost climb to $229.99, an increase from $199.99.

In the realm of accessories, Switch Joy-Con 2 controllers will now retail for $100 per pair, and the popular accessory, Alarmo, will carry a suggested price of $110. A spokesperson for Nintendo stated, "We periodically review hardware and accessory pricing to reflect current market factors.

These changes are being implemented to ensure continued availability and service quality for all Nintendo fans." Despite the Switch 2 hardware only recently launching, Nintendo is making the rare decision to increase prices on its established original Switch systems and accessories well into the product’s lifecycle, an uncommon strategy in the video game industry.

Historically, gaming consoles typically see a gradual reduction in price as hardware ages and components become less costly.

Nintendo’s decision bucks that trend, hinting at broader market influences affecting the hardware sector. Nintendo clarified that no price change is planned for the Switch 2 console, its launch titles, digital games offered through the Nintendo eShop, or Nintendo Switch Online membership tiers at this time.

However, the company noted these factors are continuously monitored and subject to adjustment based on market developments.

For fans looking to purchase an original Switch console or essential accessories, Nintendo’s announcement serves as an early notice to buy before the new pricing takes effect universally.

With the increased prices already visible at select retailers like Target, the opportunity to secure a Nintendo Switch or its accessories at legacy prices is rapidly shrinking. This move comes as Nintendo continues to enjoy strong global sales for its hardware line, with the Switch platform recently surpassing 129 million units sold as of March 2024, according to official company reports.

The introduction of new hardware, ongoing support for the eShop, and the company’s responsiveness to market changes illustrate Nintendo’s adaptive yet bold approach in a highly competitive gaming landscape.
