Nintendo continues to evolve the Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) platform, adding valuable features and beloved classics to its retro game libraries.
The company recently announced that Mario Paint, one of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System’s (SNES) most imaginative titles, has joined the Switch Online SNES library.
Alongside this addition, Nintendo introduced enhanced accessibility and control options, including full button remapping for Super NES games and mouse control support for select titles—a noteworthy step forward for retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch.
The latest update to the SNES app for NSO subscribers doesn’t just deliver new games like Mario Paint, Nobunaga’s Ambition, and Mario’s Super Picross.
It fundamentally improves the user experience by giving players the ability to remap controller buttons.
This feature, already available in the Nintendo 64 and GameCube applications on Switch, lets users tailor the button layout to their personal preferences—a significant move for accessibility, especially for gamers seeking more comfortable configurations or those who rely on custom setups for physical ease.
Players can access the remapping functionality by navigating to the same menu used for save states in the Super NES app.
Screenshots from both Super Mario World and Mario Paint illustrate how users can assign their preferred functions to each button.
For Mario Paint, which was originally designed for use with the SNES Mouse, the Switch now offers mouse control support through "Mouse Mode": users can connect a USB mouse on supported hardware to recreate the intended experience.
Notably, Mouse Mode is available on the Switch 2 platform, while Switch 1 users need a USB mouse to benefit from this feature.
Interestingly, while this update was directly highlighted in Nintendo’s official Japanese update video, it was less prominently featured in Nintendo of America’s corresponding footage—though the new "View/Change Controls" menu was briefly visible.
Regardless of the region, the feature has been rolled out globally, ensuring that all NSO members gain access to these enhanced control options.
Expanding the flexibility of classic SNES games on modern hardware is a welcome move for all players.
Whether gamers want to match the muscle memory from newer controllers, devise one-handed schemes, or simply experiment with unconventional setups, the option to remap buttons unlocks richer possibilities for play.
Community feedback, including tipsters like Suketoudara, helped highlight this useful addition, ensuring it receives the attention it merits amid the excitement over fresh retro releases.
Nintendo's ongoing improvements to the Nintendo Switch Online service demonstrate a commitment to accessibility and nostalgia alike.
As more classic titles and features roll out across the NSO ecosystem and eShop, players can look forward to an even more customizable and inclusive retro gaming landscape.
