Final Fantasy XIV launches on Nintendo Switch 2 today, bringing Square Enix’s long-running MMORPG to Nintendo’s latest hardware.

The publisher has published detailed guidance for new players on account linking, subscription handling, in-game purchases via FFXIV Coins, and a limited-time sale on both Complete Edition bundles.

This rollout follows Square Enix’s multi-platform strategy and includes platform-specific notes for the Nintendo Switch 2 release.

Square Enix has said it will waive subscription fees for approximately one month following launch to help ensure a stable player experience.

After that initial waiver, new platform registrations will receive the standard 30-day free play period included with a new license; a paid subscription will be required to continue play once that free period ends.

Square Enix also confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 version requires its own subscription even if players are subscribed on other platforms, though existing remaining game time on another platform makes the Switch 2 subscription available at half price; the publisher clarified that the half-price discount does not apply if free game time is active on other platforms.

Square Enix additionally noted that a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not required to play Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch 2.

Key launch details

- Sale: Both Complete Edition versions are 30% off through Thursday, 13 August 2026.

- Account linking: Players must link a Nintendo account to a Square Enix account the first time they launch the game on Nintendo Switch 2; this link cannot be undone, so users should confirm both accounts before proceeding.

Steps are: link your Nintendo account to the Switch user profile, purchase Final Fantasy XIV on that profile, launch from the HOME menu, and sign in with your Square Enix account.

- Cross-platform characters: Players who want to use an existing character must register the same service account during license registration; creating a new service account will not allow access to an existing character.

Payments and FFXIV Coins

Subscription fees, optional items, and additional services on Nintendo Switch 2 are paid with FFXIV Coins purchased from the Nintendo eShop.

Purchased coins must be credited to your Square Enix account by closing and relaunching the game after purchase.

FFXIV Coins can be used on the FINAL FANTASY XIV: Mog Station for service fees or on the FINAL FANTASY XIV Online Store for optional items.

When playing only on Nintendo Switch 2, payments are handled exclusively with FFXIV Coins; when playing across platforms, the Online Store allows platform selection for payment.

Nintendo Switch Online perk

Players with an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription gain one additional aetheryte registration on the Switch 2 version that can be used for zero-gil teleportation.

This perk applies only when playing the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

For launch-day performance impressions and ongoing service announcements, the Nintendo Switch 2 launcher will surface game-related news, while broader community and event information remains available via the FINAL FANTASY XIV Lodestone.
