The resurgence of retro gaming has seen a significant milestone with Playmaji’s announcement of an innovative collaboration with Sinden Technology.
Playmaji, the developer behind the upcoming all-in-one retro game console Polymega, is working to resurrect classic light gun games for the modern era, making them playable on current HDTV technology.
This move directly targets nostalgic gamers who remember iconic titles such as House of the Dead and Time Crisis, along with other classics from consoles like the NES, SNES, Sega Mega Drive, and PlayStation.
Light gun games have deep roots in video game history, with early systems offering interactive shooting experiences via specialized hardware.
However, the reliance of these peripherals on outdated CRT technology led to their obsolescence as flat-screen LCD and LED TVs became standard in households.
Until now, attempts to bring authentic light gun gameplay to modern screens have fallen short.
Playmaji aims to overcome this long-standing issue with the introduction of the RGC01, or Retro Gun Controller, designed specifically for the HDTV generation.
Utilizing technology developed by Sinden Technology—which saw overwhelming support on Kickstarter, raising £238,913—the RGC01 connects to the Polymega system using USB, enabling compatibility across a wide range of retro consoles.
This means classic shooters like House of the Dead, Time Crisis, Point Blank, Duck Hunt, Yoshi’s Safari, Lethal Enforcers, and Snatcher can now be experienced as originally intended, without the need for CRT displays.
In a recent statement, Playmaji representatives highlighted the significance of this breakthrough: 'The upcoming RGC01 will allow fans to revisit their favorite light gun titles from multiple classic platforms, finally bridging the gap between retro gaming hardware and current television technology.'
To address diverse regional regulations concerning imitation guns, Playmaji will offer two variants of the RGC01—one for North America and Japan, and another tailored for international markets.
The anticipated retail price for the U.S.
market is around $99, positioning the Retro Gun Controller as an accessible option for dedicated retro enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
Playmaji reaffirmed their commitment to showcasing the future of retro gaming by announcing a live demonstration of the RGC01 at E3 2019.
By bringing together Sinden Technology’s modern advancements and their own retro gaming expertise, Polymega stands poised to redefine how gamers experience classic shooters on today’s displays.
This initiative not only marks a significant step forward for Polymega and Playmaji but also signals a new chapter for beloved franchises and the evolution of light gun gaming.
As the retro scene continues to thrive, solutions like the RGC01 ensure that memorable titles such as House of the Dead and Time Crisis remain accessible to a new generation of players.
