A major theft involving Nintendo Switch hardware has rocked the gaming industry, as more than 2,800 Nintendo Switch Mario Kart World Edition bundles were stolen off a delivery truck in Colorado.
According to a report from 9News, this high-profile incident occurred on June 8, 2024, when a semi-truck transporting the consoles was broken into at a Love’s Truck Stop at 1191 S.
1st St.
in Bennett, Colorado.
The shipment, consisting of 2,810 Nintendo Switch consoles bundled with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, was en route to a GameStop location in Grapevine, Texas.
The hardware had initially been distributed from Nintendo of America’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington, highlighting the complex logistics involved in delivering new gaming systems to retail partners nationwide.
The driver of the semi-truck discovered evidence of the theft during a routine pre-trip inspection.
He noticed the trailer had been forcibly accessed, though he was unaware of the exact contents, only knowing the load involved games or toys.
Law enforcement was notified about the break-in at approximately 8:00 AM local time.
Authorities are currently seeking leads as the investigation continues.
The total retail value of the stolen Nintendo Switch consoles, all part of the widely popular Mario Kart World Edition bundle, exceeds $1.4 million.
This bundle is especially coveted due to its pairing of Nintendo’s best-selling console with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a title consistently topping physical and digital sales charts since its release for the Nintendo Switch platform.
The loss represents one of the most significant game hardware thefts in recent memory, disrupting supply chains and impacting availability for GameStop customers.
Nintendo of America has been proactive in supporting both retailers and law enforcement as the investigation unfolds.
In a statement relayed by 9News, officials shared that the company is cooperating fully to address the theft and ensure the safety and integrity of its product distribution.
The Nintendo Switch, which has sold more than 129 million units worldwide as of June 2024, continues to be a critical product for Nintendo, with high demand driven by popular titles like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
While this incident underscores the vulnerabilities associated with transporting valuable electronics, Nintendo and its retail partners are committed to restoring normal operations as swiftly as possible.
Anyone with information related to the theft is encouraged to contact local authorities.
