Okami 2 Confirmed on Capcom's RE Engine as Machine Head Works Supports Clovers

Capcom has confirmed that the long-awaited sequel Okami 2 is being developed using the company’s proprietary RE Engine, with Capcom publishing and Clovers serving as the development lead.

In an interview with IGN, Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata outlined the studio’s support role and how the teams are collaborating on the project.

Ōkami is a critically acclaimed Capcom franchise first released in 2006 for PlayStation 2 and later ported to Wii.

The title has seen multiple remasters: Ōkami HD arrived on PlayStation 3 in 2012, and further HD versions were released for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC in 2017, followed by a Nintendo Switch port in 2018.

The original game remains notable for its sumi-e art style and strong critical reception, which has kept interest in a direct sequel high across the industry and fan communities.

According to Sakata, Machine Head Works is acting as a technical and production bridge between Capcom and Clovers.

He explained that Capcom retains primary control of the Ōkami intellectual property and sets the major direction for the project, while Clovers leads development.

Machine Head Works contributes by applying prior experience working with Capcom on multiple titles and by providing practical knowledge of Capcom’s expectations and development processes.

Sakata also made clear that Machine Head Works is providing key RE Engine expertise: Clovers’ team has not previously worked with RE Engine, whereas Machine Head Works has hands-on experience with the technology and is helping to onboard Clovers to the engine.

He added that Machine Head Works includes staff who worked on the original Ōkami and will be involved in development to ensure continuity with the series’ legacy.

RE Engine is Capcom’s modern development platform and has powered recent high-profile releases from the publisher, including Resident Evil 7, the Resident Evil 2 remake, Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil Village.

Its use on Okami 2 suggests Capcom is investing in modern tooling for the sequel while combining legacy series knowledge with contemporary engine capabilities.

As of IGN’s report, Capcom has not announced a release date or confirmed target platforms for Okami 2.

The company’s confirmed involvement as publisher, Clovers’ role as development lead, and Machine Head Works’ support and RE Engine expertise are the verified details available at this time.
