Ōkami 20th Anniversary: Hideki Kamiya Reflects on Legacy, Sequel Plans, and New Merchandise

Capcom has launched official celebrations for Ōkami’s 20th anniversary, and director Hideki Kamiya has published a personal message marking the milestone. Ōkami was originally developed by Clover Studio and published by Capcom in 2006 for PlayStation 2; since then the title has been remastered and re-released across multiple platforms, including Wii, PC, PlayStation 3/4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in various HD editions.

On the anniversary website, Capcom is hosting fan submissions, displaying new artwork from key creators, and sharing a statement from Kamiya.

In a concise, reflective message, Kamiya said he remains astonished the original team completed and released the game, calling the completion itself a story worth telling another time.

He went on to express deep gratitude for the continued fan support over two decades and pride in having worked on the title.

Kamiya’s comments were rewritten in journalistic language as follows: he said he is surprised the development team successfully finished and shipped Ōkami, and that the sustained support from players has been a source of great happiness and pride.

He highlighted that the affection the original staff hold for the project can be felt in the range of works and products that have followed the game’s release.

Kamiya also noted his personal connection to the property, referencing a private collection of Amaterasu figures and plushies, and thanked fans for helping keep the game’s legacy alive.

Beyond reflection, Kamiya confirmed he is actively working on a new Ōkami sequel with his current studio, Clovers.

He described his continued commitment to the franchise by saying he will be putting his "blood, sweat, and tears" into the project, and asked fans to maintain their support for Ōkami moving forward.

No platforms or release dates have been announced for the sequel in Capcom's or Kamiya’s public statements.

In collaboration with Capcom, merch partner Fangamer has announced six official Ōkami anniversary products — a desk mat, socks, keychain, t-shirt, blanket, and jacket — which are available for pre-order now with a stated Q4 2026 release window.

The anniversary site also features commemorative art and invites fans to contribute messages celebrating the title’s impact.

As Ōkami enters its third decade, the franchise remains notable for its artistic cel-shaded sumi-e style, its origins with Clover Studio, and a catalogue of re-releases that have kept the game accessible on modern platforms including Nintendo Switch and major console and PC storefronts.

Capcom’s commemorative activities and Kamiya’s announcement underscore both the enduring cultural footprint of Ōkami and the developer-led momentum toward a future sequel.
