Bayonetta 3 Ending Explained: Hideki Kamiya on the Multiverse and Bayonetta’s Fate

Bayonetta 3’s multiverse twist and controversial ending have continued to generate discussion since the Nintendo Switch exclusive launched on October 28, 2022.

Developed by PlatinumGames and published by Nintendo, Bayonetta 3 took a markedly different narrative tack from its predecessors, prompting questions among fans about series canon and the future of the franchise.

In a recent edition of his book The World of Hideki Kamiya, as reported by Nintendo Everything, Bayonetta creator Hideki Kamiya revisited those narrative choices and said the multiverse concept was not an invention of Bayonetta 3.

Kamiya pointed to moments in the original Bayonetta as early foreshadowing: when Cereza is sent into the past following the confrontation with Balder, that event produces a branching timeline; a doubled, blurred background seen when Bayonetta returns and approaches Luka is, he says, an intentional visual cue showing two parallel realities overlapping.

Kamiya also addressed how players interpreted Bayonetta 3’s conclusion.

He acknowledged that many fans read the ending as a definitive death for Bayonetta and said he underestimated how much interpretive room players would need.

He clarified that certain menu and collectible cues are meant to steer interpretation toward Bayonetta’s survival in at least one timeline.

Specifically, Kamiya explained that as players progress through Viola’s chapters, keepsakes and photographs populate a destination-selection menu; after the final chapter a new photo appears that includes Luka seen from behind, which Kamiya suggests implies Bayonetta may yet exist in that world.

Kamiya encouraged players who believe the multiverse was introduced suddenly to replay the earlier games, noting that while early hints were subtle and “explanations were not sufficient,” they were nonetheless present.

For context: Bayonetta debuted in 2009, Bayonetta 2 arrived in 2014 (published by Nintendo for Wii U), and Bayonetta 3 followed on the Nintendo Switch in October 2022 — a franchise that has frequently been associated with PlatinumGames’ action design pedigree.

At present, Nintendo and PlatinumGames have not announced any confirmed future Bayonetta projects.

Players interested in the series’ narrative throughline will find value revisiting Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 on their respective platforms to spot the earlier multiverse signposts that Kamiya highlights.
